Bilateral Inguinal Hernia and Erection Function

I am a 32 year-old male, and have recently been diagnosed with
bilateral inguinal hernias, right side larger than left.  Bladder
hesitancy is my most pronounced symptom, but I have also noticed a
decline in my ability to gain an erection, and the in strength of my
erections.  This is inconsistent; sometimes I have no trouble at all.
I do not suffer much pain from the hernias, though recently I do
notice a mild, dull pain in the tip of my penis at times.  My question
is quite simply, is my erection function possibly related to the
hernias?

I generally do not post to groups, because I most often find the
answers to questions I have in previous posts.  Surprisingly, answers
to this question seem to be ambiguous.  When I told my surgeon, he
said the bladder hesitancy would definitely be taken care of, but he
wasn't sure about the erections.  I will be undergoing laparoscopic
mesh repair, if this is pertinent.  The one internet post I found that
might relate most to me is the one below:

I really appreciate any opinions, stories, or ideas related to this.
Thanks in advance.

There can be many, many contributing factors to erectile dysfunction in men,
but IMHO bilateral inguinal hernia would be among the less likely. Without a
complete workup of your ED before your operation to rule out the many other
more common causes, there would be NO WAY a surgeon could render any kind of
intelligent opinion on the effect a bilateral laparoscopic repair would
have. Based entirely on relative liklihoods, and without knowledge of a
complete history and physical exam, I'm skeptical that your planned
operation would have any effect on your ED.

Howard,
You know much more than I know about anatomy. Is it possible that some of
the blood vessels or nerves related to penis were damaged by the surgery
that was done related to the hernias?

No.

But we're talking about hernias causing ED, not their repair. The OP's
question is whether or not getting his hernias fixed will reverse his ED.

Excellent question. However, the OP has not had the surgery yet.

So the blood vessels and nerves couldn't have been damaged by the surgery.

Thanks for the responses.  I will follow up with another visit to my
physician.  The best way I can describe the whole thing is that if I
were a five speed, I can't always get past fourth gear.  Thankfully, I
do still have the ability to function, it's just weaker than I feel it
should be. My wife mentioned that I should have also written that I am
taking amox-clav (augmentin) and nicomide tablets, both for acne
treatment.
