is it strange and slightly sad that I have no idea what my blood type
is?

Freshman HS year - Biology 101.  We had to determine our own blood
type.

I don't have a clue what it is.

The only reason I know mine is cause they found x2 antibodies in
my blood so that I have to carry a 'red cross' card warning
people in case I ever need a transfusion
(which is how they found the antibodies in the first place!)
and actually it is a worry cause it is very hard to match my
blood... had to wait over a week once for a match!
...that is the only reason I would worry about it is in case of
antibodies that could cause a problem (like shock) if not
matched!

me.

I still have over a month - don't rush me!

I swore 40 wasn't going to affect me.  "I'm young," I say.  Then look
in the mirror.  or gimp down the hall.

Yep I've got crud too! Too much of everything in it. Too many whites, too
many reds, too much cholesterol, too many antibodies, too much sludge trying
to circulate through my system. LOL

Me too! Too many WBC:s, too many platelets and too many inflammatory
proteins. I could share mine with 2 other
persons and still be within normal ranges.

Hi Nina,
Too bad you and Bev can't share your extra cells with me. I'll take some
RBCs, WBCs and platelets. We could all be normal. Wouldn't that be nice?

I'd love to send some your way if that was possible. A little blood letting
might be helpful for me. LOL

We typed our own in Jr High. Years later, laboratory tests validate the
one I did - I'm B-, the worst group for transplant or so I'm told.

Perhaps you mean that it would take the longest for you to get a
transplant, because there just aren't that many B- types around.
Maybe, maybe not.  When I went on the list for the first time in 1984,
I had to have an A+ donor, and sixteen hundred other things.  This
last time, + or - didn't matter, just A.  I was a 2 out of 6 match
this time...not good in 1984...not a problem now!  Soon, perhaps blood
type won't even matter.  Immunosuppressives are getting better, and
they are using less of them.  I'm down to 8 mg Prograf three times a
week.  The Cortef I'm taking is from adrenal insufficiency, not for
the new graft.  They really don't like using steroids anymore.

Don't worry about that kind of thing, Rep.  May you never, ever need a
transplant.  However, if you do, it will be alright.  Come to
Pittsburgh, and I'll sit right there with you through the whole
process.
Beverley - 03 Mar 2004 16:49 GMT
Wes, if I ever needed a transplant I can't think of a better person I'd like
to have sit with me! You're the best!

I was also told that my unusual ethnic makeup (Ashkenazi Jew and Celtic)
would pose a problem. Then again, sometimes my doctors worry too much!

That's my plan, all right! My plan is also a lot cheaper!

How sweet of you to offer! How about coming down to Stanford and sitting
with me, if that day ever comes?

If I can, I will.

I would suggest coming down whenever you have the chance - this part of
California really is lovely, and well worth seeing.
