Hi,
I have been ill recently with a high fever and GI upset, and am now
recovering. I have not been able to get out of the house except to take a
taxi there and back to the hospitak to have my INR checked, because of the
ice and snow. My INR was 5.1. I have had some visits from my boyfriend
but apart from that I have been on my own and I have not veen able to go
out to any of my usual activities. I am feeling quite down and isolated.

Hi, I am sure you will be able to get out again soon .I live alone so feel
like that often. Once you have recovered from the GI upset I hope you want
to get out again.
Best wishes

Hi,
I am better enough now to go out but there is compacted ice on the
footpaths and snow everywhere. Unless we get a mild rain this could hang
about for ages. I am afraid of falling because I have balance problems and
osteoporosis. The only way I could go out now is if I took a taxi to the
city centre and did some shopping, taking care to avoid any ice patches,
or if I went out with someone strong enough to make sure I didnt slip.

That doesn't work, he said from experience, unless the holder-upper is
wearing crampons such as you'd need to climb Everest! "The taller they
are, the farther they fall" :)

Hopefully you were not badly hurt!
I had a Navy Seal for a neighbor and he fell on ice while leaving for work
in the morning. He shattered his arm and wrist in a million pieces. He had
pins in his arm for months.
I noticed that this ice made me very aware of just how chicken I've become.
I used to scamper and skate around on it. Not now, I walk like a tentative
little old lady expecting to land on my butt any second. I used to be
invincible now I'm very breakable. LOL

Sorry to hear this. It's starting to melt, though, so getting out should
become easier tomorrow.
Anyway, if your bones are brittle or thin, staying inside when the
outside is all covered in ice is probably the best thing to do!

Hi Lynne,
I can certainly relate to your feelings of isolation. We live in the country
and it has been so cold here, that nobody is travelling unless it is
absolutely necessary. I have not seen a neighbour for weeks now. I am a bit
of a loner anyway, but this is getting rediculous. It may be worth it to
take a taxi and go to a mall, even for a little while. I don't know if you
feel up to it, or can afford it. You would be able to people watch anyway,
if you can manage to go. That might boost your spirits a bit.

Sending you (((hugs))) across the pond and lots of good thinks.
How do you manage to buy food, etc in bad weather? Maybe you could find a
young teen to do some shopping for you. Or maybe you would consider doing
some tutoring just to have visitors. Or tutor the teen who is running the
errands. We have adult literacy programs here, people willing to teach those
who cannot read to give them a better way of life. Is there a college
nearby? Could you offer to tutor or mentor a student? Just an idea.
Hugs,
Bev

Hugs, Lynne. It's the same here. Snow & ice. If I clean off the snow
from the car, then there's ice under that.
It has to go away though, so hang on.

Hi,
Thanks all for the replies. Boyfriend took me to the shops yesterday and
cheered me up a bit. In return I cooked dinner but I was not as well as I
thought and nearly burnt it whilst going into a "blank" daydream whilst
grinding some kuzu. I shouted for help on smelling burning and we managed
to rescue the dinner. Then this morning I was thrilled to see the snow
mostly melted so I went out for a litle errand, in case the snow comes
back. Judging by the sky it may do.
I am in a skill share scheme and in return for helping 2 girls with
homework and doing some admin for a food co-op, I can get shopping and odd
jobs done when required. I live within walking distance of a small
supermarket which delivers, so when I am well I walk there and they pack
amd deliver my shopping for me. Also boyfriend helps out but he lives 4
miles away and has an aged parent to care for too. He also works very
unsocial hours and is really tired and not well himself sometimes.
Unfortunately one of my students needs me to go to her for the homework
help so if I am unwell or it is icy I can't do it.
I also do voluntary work in adult basic skills and I get a lift to the
venue with a disabled person's transport service, but I didnt feel up to
it this week.
On the subject of my recent illness: I had obtained some herbal hair dye,
and on sunday one of my students and her mum put it on my hair. They told
me I should not put henna on my hair (this wasnt henna) during the winter
because it causes the body temperature to drop (or something) and some
people have been very ill and died. Later that day I was feeling very cold
and shivery and took my temperature, and found it was 104. I wrapped up
warm, took some paracetamol and sat and watched a DVD and then went to
bed. The next day my temperature was still up but nearer 99-100. I
continued with the paracetamol but felt nauseous and couldnt eat anything
and didnt even feel like drinking any liquid.
Then on Tuesday the GI upset started, but my temp went back to normal,
which is usually low, for me.
Do you think it could have been the hair dye? It claimed to be all natural
ingredients.
Things are getting back to normal for me now.
One other thng, I have recently started on risedronate for osteoprosis My
consultant told me not to take it if I got GI trouble. I have now stopped
it. Could that be related? It certainly gave me some mild bother on the
days I did take it. But this latest one was more extreme.
Thanks again for support messages,
Lynne

Hi, I take the same med for osteoporosis and have never had any
side effects from it so I would question that being the culprit;
but everyone responds differently to each med so maybe, but maybe
you did react to the hair color substances too?
