Praise the Lord! I just got my results back from my needle biopsy Tuesday on
my Thyroid. It shows no cancer. It does look like I may have Hashimotos but
if I just have to take Synthroid for the rest of my life. I can handle that.
Thank you all for your prayers and support. I still have that weird taste in
my mouth and the ears, nose and throat doctor said nothing about it. So
maybe it has to do with my teeth although I only detect it when I breathe
through my nose. Maybe it will go away on its own. Or maybe when I have been
taking the Synthroid longer it will go away then.

Again thank you all for your help,

Paulette

Good news Paulette, like BJ says it takes some time to get the thyroid meds in
the system and settling down the thyroid and endocrine system.
Wish I knew what that taste is.
Does it remind you of "metallic" or "chemical" or "salty" or "yeasty" or
"infection" or what?
A few things come to mind, GERD (reflux), yeast infection somewhere in your
mouth (dentist?)
New formula of toothpaste? toothbrush needs throwing out?  meds side effect (are
you on anything else?)
Hope you figure it out and let us know.
Hugs
J

Actually it is like I'm smoking. Smells or tastes like an old ashtray. I do
not smoke and hate being around the stuff. But I do get a lot of second-hand
smoke at work. I only get it when I close my mouth and breath through my
nose. Both doctors looked at my sinuses and one gave me an antibiotic
thinking it might be an infection but did not make a difference. I may need
a decongestant but am afraid to take just anything because of the thyroid
med. I started right after I had my teeth cleaned. Which I had not had done
for a long time and she had to be rough. My ears have been bothering me a
little. Maybe it does have something to do with my sinuses but if the
doctors wont help what do you do? Even the ear, nose and throat guy did not
do anything. Just looked in my nose and ears. Guess you have to really get
bad before anyone will notice anything. No fever.
We have had a lot of rain here. Maybe its mold or pollen related.
Interesting that this symptom lead to me finding out about my thyroid. God
taking care of me? Mmmmmm.....

What are the symptoms of pleurisy? I have been having some uncomfortable
feelings around my diaphragm. Or have I just gained some weight!! Arg!! I
have had pleurisy in the past when it hurt to breathe. Hope it's not trying
to come back again. Took me about 3 months to get over that one.

Thanks J

Someone here or on the other NG stopped Zinc because of the weird taste.

In addition, it's contraindicated for autoimmune
disorders.http://www.sambucol.com/article_page.asp?aId=51&catId=186
which Lupus and Hashi's are.

I also see it being advertised to "help thyroid function" and some places
mentions has some % of alcohol in it.

So who knows what's going on in you?
Have you tried gargling with baking soda and warm water?  I imagine maybe the
smoking at work affects your lungs and sinuses.  If you have your own
office/area, maybe a good hepa filter would help unless you can change to
somewhere where there's no smoking.  Or ask if they can turn the furnace fan on
to run all the time, to maybe get rid of the some of the smoke?

I do have a hepa filter in my office. Thank goodness. But the kitchen area
is no mans land! I think it is very inconsiderate and still don't understand
why they have not made our building smoke free. Oh well.

I had to look up that 50 cent word "contraindicated". Did not know what it
meant. Does that mean I screwed up myself by taking Sambucol? It sure made
my cold's go away.
Have not had any since about 1 1/2 months ago. Dang it. I thought I found a
good thing!
Could it be yeast? Was reading something about that and it talked about
losing good bacteria in your body. However I have no yeast problems any
where else in my body. But I have in the past. But not recent.

Strange when I was really bad with my Lupus flairs and trying to build up my
muscles again for which is my symptom, the doctor prescribed me taking a
mineral supplement and to make sure I got zinc. Could the Sambucol be what
triggered my Thyroid stuff? If it did I'm not going to be happy. It's a
catch 22 thing with herbs/medicine isn't it. Fix one thing and screw up
something else.

ARGGGGGGG!!!!!!!

Paulette,

Congratulations that your test results showed no cancer!

Do you live in an apartment building? Maybe a tenant's smoking is
"seeping" through the walls or coming under the door. I've had both
experiences. The "seeping" because there were 8 or 10 people in the
duplex I lived in, all except the one child who lived (poor tyke)
smokers. If it was seeping through my walls, imagine what she was going
through!

Another apt. bldg. I lived in the smoke came in under the doors.

I don't allow smoking in my apt.

Nell

Sorry bout that, but I've yet to find one good "regular" word that means the
same.

> Does that mean I screwed up myself by taking Sambucol?

Unlikely, it was just one theory (zinc) as to the strange taste, but maybe
you've answered that above.
However, anything that is said/claimed to "ramp up the immune system" is usually
not good for a person with Lupus, but if it works for you and you only have mild
Lupus (ie no organ involvement), maybe it's okay - don't know (I'm not a
doctor).[]

I doubt it.

It's always wise to know the properties of foods, herbs and medicines (anything
a person ingests).

My brother had sinus problems too. His doctor gave him various nasal sprays, but
at last word it was much better and it's hard to say if it still is because I
hear there's lots of forest fires in his area now.  Anyway, hope you feel better
soon and/or find solutions to your various symptoms,
J

Hi Paulette,
I was reading some of the info I have on the thyroid. It mentions sinuses in
the list of things that can be affected. I am betting that the odd smell is
a result of your Hashimotos. I do recall odd odour too, before my thyroid
was under control. I often thought I could smell sweaty feet. I kid you not.
Sounds gross, but it is true. It will be interesting to see if the smell
goes away once the synthroid kicks in.

I hope you are right. Maybe all I have to do is be patient (not easy for me
to do) and it will eventually go away. I have been on Synthroid a week now.
We will see.

Thanks,
Paulette
