I think IJ is to blame. Google does not allow (to my knowledge)
blocking posters. As long as he is allowed to cut and paste 1000
studies / day, and/ or not take his medication... we who come here for
real information and dialogue will suffer.

I have him blocked.
Every time he comes up with a new name, it gets blocked.
People who respond also get blocked.

What service do you use to access these groups? That would be awesome.

I use Netscape 7.2. I'm not sure if it is still available.
The newer versions do not offer mail & newsgroups so I stick with this one.

Your ISP is cox.net ? (in the header of your post)
So yes, you use a newreader ( to read post block etc) but must have an ISP
which provides access to newsgroups.
netscape.net "flips" to aol web page and I can't find the plans, the cost,
which newsreaders can be used.
CB's using aol email address..maybe you can explain to him what to do
J
Paul T. Holland - 12 May 2009 00:21 GMT
and the mozilla 'thunderbird' email/newsgroup reader will let one set a
filter so that you can set it up that any particular post just gets
marked as 'read' when you download messages.

I am totally ignorant about these things.  I have used this netscape
access for many years and have accessed it through many different
providers including Cox.  Netscape discontinued their E-mail service on
my account  long ago but the newsgroups access continues.  When it also
stops I will be looking too. However, my grand daughter stills has a
Netscape mail address.  Go Figure!

I use aol for my mail service so that also contributes to the confusion
on my address. It does prevent spam though! :>)

Go to:
http://browser.netscape.com/releases

They still have the "oldies but goodies" including 7.2 for download.
There may even be a better version there. I have stuck with what works.

I hope this is helpful.

Yes I too have him blocked but so far haven't blocked the responders cause there goes our group lol!!
Seems as if so many have to get their word in cause he is just such an idiot and so ruddy ignorant.... makes you want to let him know it and give him a piece of your mind while at it.... I resist but there are times when I see a response like from Bill, to another responder that I get involved too.... not worth it I know but we'll soon be shutting the entire group out with blocking and going that route!
There has to be an answer!!
Why are his 'owners' letting him out of his cage? !

I've just looked at the group in a different way, and I sure see what
you mean - 64 posts to delete that I hadn't previously seen because of
my filtering! Not sure about an answer, though - maybe a calm acceptance
that every village has its idiot.

Some people can only access newsgroups through Google, and
I don't think they have a way to filter out posters.  Plus it's
discouraging to new posters when they have to wade through
endless off-topic posts.

Not very likely. If their ISP has dropped newsgroups as mine has there are
other providers. I am using motzarella.org Text only groups and
registration is free. Then they can use a news-client with descent
filtering. I haven't seen an IJ post for years, nor a reply:

I looked at motzarella.org's site.  They won't take anyone with an
AT&T or Bellsouth account.  That lets out quite a few people.
I don't know what other providers are out there; I haven't
had a reason to look yet.

Google is the obvious choice for people who don't want to hunt
down usenet access.  When finding access gets too annoying,
they're likely to give up on it.

Netscape is the browser/mail/usenet client you are using, and yes it will
work with nearly all providers. Fom your headers you are posting through
Cox and it looks like they farm out the service, but I can't be sure.
Netscape 7.x is based on an old version of Firefox and Thunderbird (the
mail/news component). There have been many security flaws fixed since then.
I can't tell you if any of those have been exploited.

I still have an active netscape.net email address. I'm not sure what might
end it. New ones are not available, you will be directed to AOL.

other way around - many of the netscape team jumped [when aol shut down
the project] over to the newly formed mozilla org and used much of the
old netscape code to jumpstart the new thunderbird and firebird.

bye the bye, netscape version went up to version 9

but imo, anything above ver 7.2 had too many code errors to be safe.

There have been many security flaws fixed since then.

hi george

things aren't really difficult to understand re these issues and your
history

netscape started out as an alternative service, and that included
development of a really good browser and email/newsgroup reader.

they [netscape] were the first serious contender to microsoft internet
exlorer/outlook/outlook express software, riveled only by opera and forte

aol developed their own proprietary software for their orginal 'closed'
internet system - but it was based upon the same base code as netscape

int he early internet 'wars' for customers, aol looked for any advantage
that would let them keep advantage, and decided to buy netscape and add
it to their customer offering for free - the last two netscape versions
were developed after the merger -

http://netscape.aol.com/

the idea was to use the netscape 'brand' for the dialup service,
http://www.getnetscape.com/getnetscape/?

so there are still folks with a valid netscape email addy, but htose
that went with aol service, had to move over.

http://isp.netscape.com/

aol tried to deveop dsl  delivered product.

those with netscape addy's didn't realize that their email and such was
now being carried thru aol owned servers.

and  aol has it's own form of newsgroups as 'forums' so you would have
to leave their servers to pick up usenet.

now, 'your' newsgroup service is really thru cox - they don't care which
software you use to access the server they run.

'but', aol was in big trouble - they didn't go with their own dsl
offering, and so began the slow loss of customer base as the various dsl
isp's decided to go with yahoo, msn, or make their own portals.

customers had to make the decision to pay for an isp [dsl] and also the
aol charge on top

with the ever eroding customer base, the aol decision was to discontinue
the costly development of any new netscape versions.

http://browser.netscape.com/

a great many of the code writers and developers moved from aol owned
netscape over to the newly formed 'mozilla' .org, and thus began the new
thunderbiid and firebird products.

p.s.: i used netscape until they stopped supporting it becasue now you
aren't protected fro malicious code as well. with no new updates, there
are backdoor holes that the hackers can take advantage of -

Part of the justification for top-posting.
Keeps from making the reader wade through so much old stuff.

I can remember when we were all celebrating because we thought we had
rid ourselves of IJ.... Oh well  lets get
on with our lives.  I fell and shattered my femur almost a month ago.
Spent 3 weeks in hospital and finally
got home.  I had a major lupus attack when I fell and had been taking
as much as 240 mg of prednisone in one
week.  It made me goofy.  The surgeon that put my leg back together [6
screws and a plate] is also a
rheumatologist  and has some good ideas that are helpful.  He did not
approve of the amount of prednisone.

As always I enjoy seeing all of your comments and I hope to see some
new revelations  about a break through in
lupus.    I hope   I hope  I hope               ruth

so!  Just wanted to let you know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

I am so sorry for your 'leg'.... that must have been very painful... and
ignore the rheumy and his distaste for pred...
I have not met one who believes in it for lupus...
through various hospitals and referrals... not one!
so just figure that they don't believe it is useful and they have a right to
their opinions...
and opinions are like 'thumbs'....  or a**h*l*s...... and so
most everyone has one...
so there you go from me re the rheumy's opinion!
LOL
just focus on getting well and staying away from flares and falls... good
luck Ruth!
put yourself a block on IJ.... like the rest of us who can't see him

Ruth, you are hosted at sonic.net adn they do carry newsgroups at
news.sonic.net. You can set up a news client that will be able to filter.
