Is there a group charter for ASL?

creamer@yadtel.net - 27 Aug 2008 16:19 GMT I've forwarded some of Rusty's rants to his ISP (his real ISP, not Google). The abuse people at telus.com just asked me for a copy of the ASL charter. I forwarded a 1996 post I found in the Google archives, but I don't know if it's what they want. Is the charter posted anywhere?

Paul T. Holland - 28 Aug 2008 00:06 GMT first proposal in alt.config [the hierarchy that approves creation of new usenet groups] this is the lcreation of alt.support.lupus:

the last post in the thread has the charter wording - note the typo on the word 'inactive' which was suposed to read 'interactive'

> paul Thanks; it's the same item that I forwarded to abuse@telus.com
The letter they sent me this morning says that they "told their customer to cease his activities," so I hope ASL has seen the last of Rusty's weirdness. Actually I think this is cause for celebration, with music, dancing and a parade:

JT CornCob - 28 Aug 2008 03:41 GMT > I've forwarded some of Rusty's rants to his ISP > (his real ISP, not Google). The abuse people [quoted text clipped - 4 lines] > > --Bill Thompson There's a brief section in the FAQ but the page is down now. I did not agree with some of the wording.
Make a charter and we'll vote on it? Maybe we can all get people to come back and vote or I can receive votes privately.
The lupus patients and their friends and families need someplace to share support, information, and comfort.
Charter There are a great many people who are lupus patients, their families, and their friends who need a place to communicate with each other and support each other. A newsgroup dedicated to sharing information and offering the support these people need would be of great value.
This news group would limited to message containing information, support and comfort, and as a place where their feelings could be freely expressed without fear of abuse or personal attacks.
To this end alt.support.lupus will be the ideal platform for allowing active dialog between lupus patients, their families, and their friends. People with associated autoimmune probelsms or suspected, but yet diagnosed may also be welcome here.
The information posted will be what helps one or the other, which may include medicines or other topics. From time to time, clinical trial information may be posted.
What's not appropriate is:
Commercial advertising .A.s.L.'s view of spam. Posts with messages and webpages disguising spam are inappropriate and will be reported.
Product posts by individuals with a financial or business interest, unless it's a lupus patient who also shows a blog of their life with lupus. In other words, some patients may be making some money by selling or referring to websites, items that help, due to their disability; but outsider spam is not welcome here and will be discouraged. The regulars will make that decision based on the posters, posting history here, so they have to be prepared to tell us their preveious posting ID, so it can be researched in the archives.
Asking for donations is unacceptable. . Talking about financial difficulties is acceptable
Talking about "walks" for Lupus research is acceptable.
Harassment is inappropriate.
Threats are inappropriate.
Degrading others in inappropriate.
Chain letters, frauds, urban legends, Multi-level Marketing, Make Money Fast, investment schemes are prohibited. If you make a mistake, apologize, but if you're in the habit of some of these on this and other newsgroups and don't stop, you may be reported.
Off-topic materials, advertising, spam, excessive posting of the same material, and inappropriate cross-postings are prohibited. Most crossposts are inappropriate. Ask the group first AND always indicate the groups being crossposted to, so those who don't want their replies going elsewhere, will be sufficiently warned.
Job postings, resumes, announcements, flaming, trolling, baiting, flooding, post bombing, troublemaking, or other forms of net-abuse or abuse of alt.support.lupus newsgroup users are prohibited.
Troll posting (cross-postings directed to a.s.l from other newsgroups with the express purpose of disrupting the a.s.l group), flame baiting or unwarranted flaming is prohibited.

Work on it? Once most of the people agree, we'll "call out" to everyone we can, to vote Explanations on when and how to follow.

Shelagh - 29 Aug 2008 01:02 GMT I'm all for it Bill, and thanks for attempting to get rid of the troll. Like most trolls, he really is nothing but a big air head chock full of himself... annoying as all get out to everyone! He has been a menace to this group with all his junk filled posts and cross posts and I do believe that is why most former members are not bothering even to check it out anymore. Good luck with all things positive for this support group as I firmly believe it is necessary for all patients but especially the newly diagnosed lupines and their friends and family. hugs, Shelagh http://members.shaw.ca/tiderington ~> Lupus Invisible in Plain Sight

I know. He's so dumb, he couldn't tell you when the War of 1812 began. I'll keep forwarding his posts to abuse@telus.com. Maybe that will accomplish something, although I wouldn't hold my breath.

The abuse people [quoted text clipped - 13 lines] > The current charter fits the usual definition of the alt in the > newsgroup name: anarchists, lunatics & terrorists. I like the idea of updating the charter to something that is more relevant to our desires, however I think it unlikely that we will see any action by the ISP reducing the offending posts quantity. I have notseen a post of "Rusty's" for a long time. Good newsreaders easily filter out the drivel. Here are my filters:
!delete From "ironjustice" -10 Xpost %>3 -250 Message-ID "google"
I then score up those posters that I know (the regulars here) so if they post from googlegroups I will see it. Reading from googlegroups doesn't give you any filtering to speak of and the most commonly used reader in this group, Outlook Express or now Windows Mail isn't much better.
Un/fortunately this is the way of USENET. And that is not a typo.

Paul T. Holland - 29 Aug 2008 20:52 GMT your [the] newsgroup charter was set when the group was first 'proposed' -
the process is usually to post a notice for discussion of creation on 'news.announce', with followup on 'config' then a call for votes, then a tally - presuming that there are no issues - then the big eight administrators add the new group to the distribution list for the servers.
you can look all this up on several sites, a good one is:
http://www.faqs.org/faqs/usenet/creating-newsgroups/part1/
but the bottom line right now is that the charter is what it is. there isn't provision for 'new or amended' charters - what you 'can' do is similar:
have a 'discussion' and 'propose' the creation of a 'faq' for the group. this is where you can arrive at 'netiquette' for the altered times.
for instance - i might propose that:
when someone posts about a specific medical study, they should state in simple terms why they think it applies to the group
or:
that this group does not think it appropriate to post language that demeans an ethnic, racial, or sexual preference group
etc - you get the idea.
in this discussion, everyone has the right to make suggestions, discuss, disagree - et al then you appoint a vote wrangler [or two] and call for a vote on each and every item - votes are posted publicly so that everyone knows and can tally 'em themselves if they feel the need - the wranglers do the official tallies and then:
'someone' keeps a copy of the final 'faq' and periodically posts it.
you can put in things you'd prefer [but can't require]
bottom [or, top] posting no all caps posts no use of the [carlinesque] 7 bad words
this boils down to how the regular posters wish it to be - without the absoluteness of the originating charter.
understand, once a 'faq' is decided upon, you'd post it over in announce, perhaps even file it with 'faq' org and the like - BUT it will only be viewed as 'convention' - many isp's will honor a published faq as quickly as a charter - worth thinking about - but harder to do than you might think - this is 'alt' after all.

Until then, I guess all we can do is to complain to Rusty's ISP. That's abuse@telus.com. They want the entire message, its headers and a copy of the newsgroup charter. (And if anyone wants to verify his ISP, its identity is buried in the headers. Find the NNTP hosting post, which will give you a number with several decimal points in it. Then do an NS lookup; I've been using http://www.zoneedit.com/lookup.html Type the hosting post number into the IP address box and hit enter; the search engine will return the information on the host's ID.)
Rusty posts through Google, but they aren't interested in abuse complaints and they aren't his actual host.

I'll schedule the festival to begin about twenty minutes after sunset (when it's dark enough for me).
Rusty is still trolling, alas--but we can invite him to a torchlight parade:
