Prostate cancer is one of the most treatable cancers but it must be caught
early. There is a simple blood to check for this cancer. Every man over the
age of 45 should be tested yearly. If there is any history of prostate
cancer, breast or other hormone related cancer within a family the testing
should start much sooner - 30 yrs. old is not too soon in some instances.
Also any man who has served in Vietnam should be checked. There are no
symptoms!!!!!!! By the time a man has symptoms that something is wrong the
odds are against him.
Oh, it's just prostate cancer? Excuse me!!!!!!!! It's CANCER, got that! If
you don't find it soon enough then it spreads to nearby tissues and
eventually into the bones. It kills and it is vicious.
If caught early enough it can be treated by a variety of ways. There is no
perfect treatment, they all have flaws and side-effects but it is not what
it was 20 years ago. Today, men can be treated and continue to live and
function just as they always did. It might knock them out of the saddle for
a few weeks or months but no worse than us being pregnant.
And don't let some doctor tell you that you are too young to be tested. It's
a simple blood test. If it comes back elevated then the next step is a
biopsy. Not exactly comfortable but not painful. You walk into the office,
you have it done and you walk back out.
Every man should know his PSA!!! Right now there are three husbands in this
group (that I know of) who have been treated for prostate cancer and Janers'
husband is being checked for it. The odds are if you are a man you will
probably have prostate cancer in your lifetime. Scary, isn't it? Please, if
you have questions contact me.

Hi Bev,
Thanks for caring. I have been tested several times. I'm ashamed to
say that I don't know the number. But I was told that it was very,
very low. I would not have been transplanted if there was any problem
at all.
