Since phytate has gone up against etidronate .. who IS this ..
etidronate .. ?
This study the author simultaneously speaks to etidronate as the drug
used and then switches right into .. risedronate .. so they must

"Fractures occurred in 7 patients in the placebo group and one patient
in the risedronate group. The relative risk in the risedronate group
as compared with the placebo group was 0.14 (95% confidence interval,
0.02 to 1.11). The number of fractures per 1000 patient-years was 14
and 92 for the etidronate and placebo groups, respectively. Treatment
with etidronate prevents further loss of BMD in patients with ALS and
leads to the prevention of fractures."

Publication type:

Incidence of fractures is high in patients with amyotrophic lateral
sclerosis (ALS) as compared to age-matched healthy controls. Our
previous cross-sectional study showed that immobilization-induced
hypercalcemia (i.e., increased bone resorption) and 25-hydroxyvitamin
D (25-OHD) deficiency contribute to reduced bone mineral density
(BMD). This study aims to address the possibility that treatment with
etidronate may reduce the bone resorption and lower the incidence of
fractures in patients with ALS. ALS patients were randomly assigned to
daily treatment with 400 mg of etidronate (n = 41) or a placebo (n =
41) and followed for 2 years. At baseline, both groups had low BMD
with high levels of serum ionized calcium and pyridinoline cross-
linked carboxy-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (ICTP). In the
etidronate group, serum calcium and ICTP levels decreased
significantly during the study period, while the levels in the placebo
group were increased. Over 2 years, serum 25-OHD reduced to the
potentially osteomalacic level (less than 5 mg/mL) in both groups. BMD
decreased by 3.6% in the etidronate group and decreased by 12.1% in
the placebo group (P < 0.0001). Fractures occurred in 7 patients in
the placebo group and one patient in the risedronate group. The
relative risk in the risedronate group as compared with the placebo
group was 0.14 (95% confidence interval, 0.02 to 1.11). The number of
fractures per 1000 patient-years was 14 and 92 for the etidronate and
placebo groups, respectively. Treatment with etidronate prevents
further loss of BMD in patients with ALS and leads to the prevention
of fractures.

Novel bone resorption inhibitors

Potential:

We have discovered a novel class of compounds that have potent
inhibitory effects on bone resorption as assessed by studies using
various in vitro assay systems. We believe that these compounds may be
of clinical value in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and
other disorders associated with increased bone resorption.

The potential market for these drugs is huge. The osteoporosis market
alone in the U.S.A. is thought to comprise 30 million patients and is
worth approximately $2.0 Billion (U.S.) Inhibitors of bone resorption
are also used to treat many common bone diseases including cancer-
associated bone disease, hypercalcaemia, and Paget's disease of bone.

Technology:

The project is in the area of biotechnology using cell culture based
assays and other model systems to develop novel inhibitors of bone
resorption.

Concept:

We already have evidence that the compounds we have discovered are
effective at inhibiting bone breakdown in vitro. The Proof of Concept
to be tested is that these compounds can be developed into effective
drugs for the treatment of patients with bone disease in clinical
practice.

phytate has gone up against the bisphosphonate etidronate <<

This is taken from the site below and it is an anti soy site .. but it
does show how the world looks at this natural substance found in your
food .. this natural .. cancer killing rheumatoid arthritis curing ..
bisphosphonate.

http://www.rheumatic.org/soy.htm

Soybeans are also high in phytic acid or phytates.
This is an organic acid, present in the bran or hulls of all seeds,
which blocks the uptake of essential minerals-calcium, magnesium, iron
and especially zinc-in the intestinal tract.
Although not a household word, phytates have been extensively
studied.
Scientists are in general agreement that grain and legume based diets
high in phytates contribute to widespread mineral deficiencies in
third world countries.

Analysis shows that calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc are present in
the plant foods eaten in these areas, but the high phytate content of
soy and rice based diets prevents their absorption.
The soybean has a higher phytate content than any other grain or
legume that has been studied.
Furthermore, it seems to be highly resistant to many phytate reducing
techniques such as long, slow cooking. Only a long period of
fermentation will significantly reduce the phytate content of
soybeans.
Thus fermented products such as tempeh and miso provide nourishment
that is easily assimilated, but the nutritional value of tofu and bean
curd, both high in phytates, is questionable.

When precipitated soy products are consumed with meat, the mineral
blocking effects of the phytates are reduced.
The Japanese traditionally eat tofu as part of a mineral-rich fish
broth.
Vegetarians who consume tofu and bean curd as a substitute for meat
and dairy products risk severe mineral deficiencies. The results of
calcium, magnesium and iron deficiency are well known, those of zinc
are less so.
Zinc is called the intelligence mineral because it is needed for
optimal development and functioning of the brain and nervous system.
It plays a role in protein synthesis and collagen formation, it Is
involved in the blood sugar control mechanism and thus protects
against diabetes; it is needed for a healthy reproductive system.

Zinc is a key component in numerous vital enzymes and plays a role in
the immune system.
Phytates found in soy products interfere with zinc absorption more
completely than with other minerals.
Literature extolling soy products tends to minimize the role of zinc
in human physiology, and to gloss over the deleterious effect of diets
high in phytic acid.

Milk drinking is given as the reason second generation Japanese in
America grow taller than their native ancestors.
Some investigators postulate that the reduced phytate content of the
American diet-whatever maybe its other deficiencies-is the true
explanation, pointing out that Asian and Oriental children who do not
get enough meat and fish products to counteract the effects of a high
phytate diet, frequently suffer rickets, stunting and other growth
problems.

Phytate content and phytate degradation by endogenous phytase in pea
(Pisum sativum)
Authors: Fredrikson M.1, *; Alminger M.L.1; Carlsson N-G.1; Sandberg A-
S.1

Source: Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, Volume 81,
Number 12, 15 September 2001 , pp. 1139-1144(6)

Publisher: John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
Abstract:

In order to rapidly reduce the content of inositol tri-hexaphosphates
in pea flour by action of the endogenous phytase, raw materials as
well as incubation conditions have been evaluated. The phytate
(inositol hexaphosphate) content was analysed in 27 pea varieties; the
influence of storage time and the difference in phytate content
between the germ and the cotyledon were determined. Furthermore,
degradation of inositol phosphates by the endogenous phytase enzyme
was studied in pea flour, germ and cotyledon. To find the maximum
phytate degradation, the effects of temperature and pH during pea
flour incubation were investigated. The most efficient phytate
degradation in pea flour incubation was achieved at pH 7.5 and 45 °C.
At this condition an almost complete degradation of phytate and a 66%
reduction in the sum of inositol hexa-, penta-, tetra- and
triphosphates were reached in 10 h. The storage time of pea seeds or
removal of the germ did not have a major effect on the phytate
content. Since several inositol pentaphosphate isomers were produced
during phytate degradation, it can be concluded that peas contain
several phytate-degrading enzymes, or one phytate-degrading enzyme
with unspecific initial hydrolysation pattern.
