This colchicine is so good but it kills you but people still / HAVE ..
to take it.
Any ideas .. why .. ?

Changes in serum carbonyl and malondialdehyde levels following
colchicine and vitamin E treatment in Behcet's disease.

University, Ankara, Turkey. mdzengin@yahoo.com.
Behcet's disease (BD) is an inflammatory disorder of an unknown cause,
but growing evidence indicates that the oxidative stress is increased
in BD, owing to the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS)
and decreased efficiency of antioxidant defenses. ROS affect proteins
and lipids and cause their oxidation, therefore, contributing to the
formation of oxidation products: carbonyl, a marker of protein
oxidation, and malondialdehyde (MDA), a marker of lipid peroxidation.
The investigation was undertaken to evaluate protein oxidation
(carbonyl group) levels and lipid peroxidation (MDA) levels, and the
role of colchicine and vitamin E therapy on protein carbonyl group and
MDA levels in serum samples of patients with BD. In this study,
subjects were classified as control group, colchicine therapy group
alone and colchicine and vitamin E therapy group. Protein carbonyl and
MDA levels at the beginning of the study were significantly (p < 0.05)
higher in both therapy groups compared with those of the control
group. We found that the protein carbonyl and MDA levels at the end of
the study showed no significant (p > 0.05) differences between the
therapy groups and control group. These results provide some evidence
for a potential effect of colchicine and vitamin E therapies on
increased protein oxidation and lipid peroxidation in BD. (c) 2007

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colchicine
Colchicine is a highly poisonous natural product and secondary
metabolite, originally extracted from plants of the genus Colchicum
(Autumn crocus, also known as the "Meadow saffron"). Originally used
to treat rheumatic complaints and especially gout, it was also
prescribed for its cathartic and emetic effects. Its present medicinal
use is mainly in the treatment of gout; as well, it is being
investigated for its potential use as an anti-cancer drug. It can also
be used as initial treatment for pericarditis and preventing
recurrences of the condition.

I was given this for the severe chostocondritis pain that I have... as
it has been recently either said to be used or approved of use for
that...
costcondritis dang sp for most means one chostochondral joint on one
side of the sternum... but for me it means both sides and in the back
and the sternum as well... making it difficult to breath... and they
say it is like tendinitis meaneing it needs rest to make it better,
but since we breath it is a viscous cycle...
then of course they were calling the awful pain upon touching any part
of my rib cage was that too, but it isn't and I don't know what it is,
but if you put enough pressure through my skin on any bone it is very
painful especially undermy arms in the rib cage... when I wake up in
the morning before any meds are working it feels like I have to keep
my trunk stiff and my chest full of air just to walk.
who knows... my bone density was abnormal for my age but normal within
my disease... which sounds kind of stupid to me so I'm not being
treated for it and a recent mri showed my bones were dehydrated...
blah
but after reading up on this drug I stopped taking it... I couldn't
feel it helping anyway.

When I have chostocondris the Doctor gives me prednisone which
relieves it within hours. Isn't colchicine mostly for gout? ruth

i can't take prednisone for 2 reasons now... I have cushings and it
always skyrockets my bp.
but about 7 or 8 months ago maybe longer it was written in some docs
journal or something like hat or approved old goat may know more...
but for the most part people have said it relieved theirs very
effectively.

Cushing's syndrome and Cushing's disease, more accurately known as hyperadrenocorticism is the condition which occurs when the body produces too much hormone, particularly corticosteroids <i.e.: prednisone> or cortisol.
The most common cause of Cushing’s is a tumor in the pituitary gland, and the least common is cancer of the adrenal gland.
Treatment depends on the specific reason for cortisol excess and may include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or the use of cortisol-inhibiting drugs.
It is treated with the meds in order to keep the adrenal cortices killed back.
You would not treat it with steroids.

"If you receive an early diagnosis of Addison's disease, treatment may involve taking prescription corticosteroids. Because your body isn't producing sufficient steroid hormones, your doctor may have you take one or more hormones to replace the deficiency."
Perhaps you were considering Addison's diagnosis?
