Kidney problems...again

Greetings to all...it has been a long time.

My wife's kidneys acting up again...she (Kelley) currently has a stone in
her left one and has large amounts of blood and protein in her urine.  She
received a referral to a nephrologist today (18Sep07).  We are concerned
that she will lose at least one kidney.  Her red blood cell count is
presently 21 (it was 16 four weeks ago, so the hematologist did 8 iron
infusions at 2 per week).  However, she is bleeding via both her uterus and
kidney.

Background:
She had her 1st stone removed in 1991 and we realized that she had subtle
symptoms of lupus even before then...low grade fevers, chronic fatigue,
irritable bowel syndrome and achy joints to name a few.  She was diagnosed
with both SLE & DLE and fibromyalgia in 2001.  Since then, she has had 3
strokes...experienced temporary kidney failure in 2003.

On a happy note, our daughter Kelsey started Kindergarten on 04Sep07...she
is what keeps Kelley going.

We are afraid...

Dear Dan,

I have already offered a prayer for Kelley, Kelsey and yourself that
there may be healing and comfort at this time.

Please keep us informed of the progress.

God bless you all,

George

Dan,
I know next to nothing about kidney problems but wanted to let you know that
you, your wife, and daughter are in my prayers.

the group has been pretty quiet lately but we do have some people who do
have kidney problems and they should be responding soon.

Hang in there!

Daniel, I've had lupus for 30+ years & recently discovered that I have lupus
nephritis. It's my understanding that kidney stones are a totally unrelated
problem. Your wife's protein in the urine is of more concern; many lupoids
have a problem with lupus nephritis. Where do you live? There's a much
higher incidence of kidney stones in Great Lakes region because of the
calcium deposits left from glaciers. Anyway, stones have nothing to do with
lupus. Have they biopsied her kidney(s)? That's the only way to dx
nephritis; I know because I recently went thru it. I know about the
insidiousness of lupus - I had symptoms at 12 but wasn't dx'd until I was
30. Hindsight . . . Oh, research is also underway about fibro being a
precursor to lupus, researchers know there's a link, they just can't find
it. Does she test positive for the anti-cardiolipin antibody
(anti-phospholipid syndrome)? That could explain the strokes & the bleeding
problems. Anti-phospholipid syndrome is often present with lupus. Has she
ever has a rash from the sun? NOT a sunburn, but a burny, itchy, bumpy rash.
That's often indicative of anti-phospholipid syndrome but some people, docs
included, as a 'sun poisoning'. Doesn't exist - something causes it, either
some medications or APS. Geesh, I wish you well & will be praying. Hope this
helped some.

Uh, oh! Sun poisoning? I've had that a few dozen times in my life and the
weird thing was I wasn't really sun burned. The most I ever do is turn a
little pink and then brown. (I used to get so dark in the summer my mother
swore she was going to disown me. LOL) I've had five real sunburns in my
life, once in Florida, once in Hawaii, once from a sunlamp, once while I was
pregnant, and in the vague recesses of my mind when I was a little kid I got
sunburned.

Sorry, I went off on a tangent & forgot my point about anti-phospholipid
syndrome. If you have it you will bleed more than normal from external
wounds, skin, car wrecks, accidents, etc., or internal - weak & leaky blood
vessels, etc. But at the same time, paradoxically it internally causes your
blood to be thick & sticky, making you much more prone to clots. Again,
'they' don't understand why. It leaves a person much more susceptible to
stroke, thrombosis; anywhere in the body. In my case, what the docs thought
was maybe a stone 10 years ago because my right ureter was swollen shut
(VERY painful) was actually caused by a clot in my renal vein, causing part
of my kidney to die due to lack of oxygen ie blood flow. The test is simple
& inexpensive. My recent kidney biopsy showed stage 2 lupus nephritis so
I've been doing a lot of research.
