Role of iron in the photosensitization by uroporphyrin.Menon IA,
Becker MA, Haberman HF.
Department of Medicine and Ophthalmology, University of Toronto, ON,
Canada.

The role of iron in the mechanism of photosensitivity due to
uroporphyrin was investigated. There is frequently increased levels of
Fe in the serum from patients with porphyria cutanea tarda, where the
photosensitivity is due to uroporphyrin. It has been reported that
H2O2 has a major role in the uroporphyrin induced photosensitivity.
Hence we examined the hypothesis that Fe would catalyze the production
of OH from H2O2 and the OH thus formed may have a significant role in
the uroporphyrin photosensitivity. This was examined by studying the
effects of the Fe chelating compound deferoxamine in an in vitro
system. Our results show that deferoxamine inhibited the uroporphyrin
photosensitivity, but not the photosensitivity due to protoporphyrin.
This indicates that Fe may play a role in the uroporphyrin
photosensitization in the skin, by accelerating the formation of OH,
which may be a major reactive species responsible for the
photosensitization in porphyria cutanea tarda.

Lookit the dates on your cites, Rusty.  You dug up an ancient, off-topic
report which "indicates" that iron "may" play a role in one of the
porphyrias.
You're really desperate for an excuse to spam, aren't you?

Which means what, Rusty?  That you've got a Telly Savalas fixation?

>>You dug up an ancient, off-topic

porphyrias.<<

Off topic means .. not .. on topic ..

You are kind of .. stupid .. aren't .. ya ..

Photosensitivity and pustular eruptions are NOT .. 'common' TO ..
lupus ..

Eat me ..

Porphyrin ACCUMULATION / excretion is COMMON to both .. lupus and
porphyria .. in **fact** the porphyrias are .. linked .. TO ..
lupus ..

Sooo .. you say they are NOT .. "caused by" ,, iron .. and I say
they .. are ..

And the very fact .. iron reduction and / or antioxidants are BEING
tested .. IE: iron binding substances in sun protection creams
TARGETING lupus sufferers /ATTESTS to the FACT there is PLENTY of iron
in those with lupus and the FACT there is rust / oxidative stress
FOUND in those with lupus .. means .. ?

Find the cause of the oxidative stress and you may have found your
culprit ..

The culprit being someone who produces / causes to produce increased
oxidative stress and YOU say it .. "isn't the iron found everywhere in
those with lupus" .. and I say .. " it is the iron " ..

>>You're really desperate for an excuse to spam, aren't you?
<<

Spam .. intensive posting of commercial interest .. commonly .. off
topic ..

Sooo .. like I said .. before .. you don't / cannot .. u-n-d-e-r-s-t-a-
n-d .. medical studies and you don't .. k-n-o-w .. what spam .. is ..

So .. again what are you doing ON this .. particular .. thread ..

Exhibiting your .. stupidity ..

Heh .. heh ..

"Association between smoking / polycythemia and transfusions /
polycythemia"  ..

You see .. smoking **increases** red blood cell production
therefore .. polycythemia .. transfusions **increase** red blood cells
therefore .. polycythemia .. and the research shows .. **evidence** ..
that .. **increased** red blood cell production is LINKED .. to ..
lupus ..

But YOU .. 'say' .. **it** .. isn't ..

'Cite" something ..

Lupus Research Update
Risk factors for developing systemic lupus erythematosus: a case-
control study in southern Sweden.
Rheumatology (Oxford). 2002 May;41(5):563-71.
Department of Rheumatology, University Hospital of Lund, Sweden.
To explore the risk factors that have been suggested to be associated
with the development of systemic lupus erythematosus. A case-control
study was performed and a questionnaire was developed to obtain the
data. Consecutive female incident cases diagnosed between 1981 and
1999 in a defined geographical area in southern Sweden were included.
Controls, matched for calendar year of birth, were selected randomly
from the same area. In total, 85 cases and 205 controls agreed to
participate. The questionnaire included questions about formal
education, body weight and height, medical history, family history of
autoimmune diseases, exposure to ultraviolet radiation, animals, hair-
colouring dyes, alfalfa (lucerne) sprouts, smoking and alcohol habits,
history of physical traumata, blood transfusion, silicone breast
implants, exogenous oestrogens, other medication, and significant
negative life events. RESULTS: Using a multivariate model, a history
of hypertension, drug allergy, a type I/II sun-reactive skin type and
a family history of SLE were all significantly associated with an
increased risk of developing SLE, whereas consumption of alcohol was
inversely associated with the risk of SLE. A suggested association
with increased systemic lupus erythematosus risk was seen for smoking
and blood transfusions. Neither exposure to exogenous oestrogen nor
exposure to hair-colouring dyes was associated with SLE. CONCLUSIONS:
Risk factors of both exogenous and endogenous origin were identified
in this population-based series of systemic lupus erythematosus
patients.

And if you were planning on testing this .. increased iron increased
red blood cell production hypothesis you might want to look at a
substance which is KNOWN to increase iron and increase red blood cell
production .. oral contraceptives .. which ..
'coincidentally' {hypothesis tested and proven] .. cause .. c-a-u-s-

Chorea associated with oral contraceptive therapy.Dove DJ.
PIP: Fernando and Chir 1st reported an association between chorea and
oral contraceptives (OCs) in 1966. Differential diagnosis of chorea,
in addition to Sydenham chorea, include Wilson disease; encephalitis;
Huntington chorea; drug intoxication; benign familial chorea;
pregnancy; systemic lupus erythematosus; Henoch-Schonlein purpura;
polycythemia vera; hypocalcemia; hyperthyroidism; carbon monoxide
poisoning; cerebral infarction, and; intracranial tumor. Chorea can
also occur as an untoward side-effect of OC therapy, as shown by the
case report of a 20-year old white woman. Chorea associated with OC
therapy occur unilateraly but has also been bilateral in 37% of
reported cases. 8 of 24 reported cases (33%) had a prior history of
rheumatic fever - mean age of patient was 22 years (range, 16 to 40
years). The time between initiation of OC therapy and appearance of
choreiform movements can vary from 6 days to 9 months, with a mean of
3 months. Time between discontinuation of OC therapy and cessation of
symptoms vary from 3 days to 3 months, with a mean of 5 weeks.
Speculations by various authors on the pathogenesis of chorea are
described.

the only mention of lupus in this article....come after the words
"differential diagnosis etc"....

that means..."rule out" etc....

not to mention that the article is from 1966...over 40 years ago...

a lot has been learned since then
