Question about Costal Chondritis

Does anyone know if chondritis is limited to the costal cartilage?

I woke up numerous times last night with pain in my right hip, near my
rib cage.  And it's not getting any better.  I'm about 2 grunts and one
'dag blessit' away from popping prednisone!  This feels JUST like the
costal chondritis does when I'm flaring with it, except not in the
ribs.  It takes my breath away just like it.  And I didn't do anything
strenuous to pull a muscle, but we all know we don't necessarily have
to.  I have been flaring here and there for awhile now, so I suspect
it's AI related.

Thanks,
Maggie

Hi Maggie,
I've had costochronditis many times; (look up costochronditis instead of
Costal Chondritis & you'll find a lot more info) have it now as a matter of
fact. When it gets worse, & I have fevers, malar rash, body aches, etc. I
know I'm in for lupus pneumonitis. But no, costo won't make your hip hurt.
BUT if you have costo & you're in a flare, your other joints ie tendons are
likely to be inflamed also, which could explain the hip pain. Been there. I
know Pred is bad, but I know when I've reached the point of no return . . .
Hope that helped Maggie.

Thanks Candi, it did help.  I'll look up costo here soon.  Never hurt
in this spot before, but it's making up for it...lol!

BTW, Mitch isn't talking about you, is he?  I noticed the spelling
difference in the names there,

Thanks again,
Maggie

Hi Maggie

YOu sure it isn't what they call plurisy?? That usually happens when you
take a deep breath or Try too and it hurts like a sucker.  I am nice here
LOL.

does the area right in your breast bone bother you as well? Or is this just
the area you mentioned.

Could be pleurisy - they feel very similar. Sharp stabbing pains, kinda like
the stitch you get in your side if you run fast. They often go hand in hand,
too. Pleurisy is inflammation of the pleural area surrounding your lungs,
costochonditis is inflammation of the connective tissue in the rib joints. I
was surprised to learn just how many little joints your ribs have.

Do you have a diagnosis of Fibromyalgia as well?  I get Pleurisy...and
as others have said, it hurts like **&&^^**&^^!  I expect that
costchondritis is a factor too.  But I also get excruciating hip pain.
I know that when my hip pain is on the outside of my hip, it's probably
due to fibromyalgia......but then again, you never know with us Lupies!
The unfortunate bottom line is this: prednisone is the treatment for
pleurisy and costochondritis....yuck

Hope you are feeling better.  I just popped my prednisine too!

Yeah, of course fibro too. Sometimes my doc has a hard time differentiating
between a lupus flare or a fibro flare, & he's head of rheumatology at
University Hosp.
