Just left my hearing test and the results are not good. Doc noticed lupus on
my history and remarked that lupus can cause certain nerve damage in the
hearing system. I have another appt later with a lupus doc, but has anyone
here heard of this?
thanks
I have heard about it. Mostly it has to do with neuritis of the nerve that
has to do with hearing, thus the loss later. Inflammation of any nerve is
painful then the nerve reacts to that.
I myself have profound loss and use bilateral hearing aides. Digital now
but the cost is way high. It is too bad insurance companies don't have help
for people with loss.
I do not know what caused my hearing loss, happened slowly and gradually
since 75. Was told then they could do nothing about it but with help of a
good doc and audiologist and hearing company I am doing pretty well. That
and for the fact I read some lips too. so................
There are different causes of hearing loss and you need to find out if it is
nerve conduction or bone problems in the middle ear. I realize you said
hearing test, so was it by an audiologist?
What about speech recognition. This is all needed to know to find out the
cause of your loss too.
I do can't judge if it does or does not (lupus) effect loss. I just know
sometimes it is a "B" to live with. Especially in a conversation in a
crowded room
I have a clarity phone by walker that helps also.
Did the hearing test note you need aides?
janers
Are you kidding me? Something else to be concerned about? Is no part of
our bodies sacred?
I hope there's help for your hearing loss
Nicole

I too found it hard to believe Nicole ! but read from this link

**A 51-year-old woman had sudden profound sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in her right ear, followed by profound SNHL in her left ear three weeks later. On subsequent work-up, a diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) was made on the basis of an antinuclear antibody titer of 1:500 and immunofluorescence below the dermis on skin and muscle biopsy specimens. Treatment with prednisone and cyclophosphamide did not improve the hearing loss. To our knowledge, this is the second reported case of SLE occurring with SNHL and the first reported case of bilateral hearing loss.**

**Ear involvement is not unusual in autoimmune diseases, but few data on this problem in the Sjogren syndrome are available.
The presence of vasculitis, the Raynaud phenomenon, nervous system involvement, and serum anticardiolipin antibodies was recorded. RESULTS: 14 patients with the Sjogren syndrome (46% [95% CI, 28% to 66%]) had sensorineural hearing loss. Only one control (2.5% [CI, 0.06% to 13%]) had a similar hearing impairment (P < 0.001). Nine of the 14 patients who had the Sjogren syndrome and sensorineural hearing loss (64% [CI, 36% to 87%]) had anticardiolipin antibodies compared with only 3 controls (18% [CI, 4% to 45%]) (P = 0.02). CONCLUSION: The high prevalence of hearing loss in the Sjogren syndrome supports the value of doing audiometric studies before excluding cranial nerve involvement in this disease. The correlation of sensorineural hearing loss with anticardiolipin antibodies must be investigated further.**

Heh, yeah, bizarre. Through various tests, they have determined nerve
damage somewhere. Internal, of course, and impossible to treat. Even more
odd, it might improve slightly on it's own, and they don't know why. But
apparently it happens.
Lupus doc next week to see what he says.
Hi Bob,
I was born deaf in one ear and have managed pretty well all of my life until
last Dec. when my good ear started ringing. I had all kinds of tests and for
what I can reason, Lupus has done it to me again in a new way. Along with
the autoimmune thyroid problem as well. Just part of life I guess with
Lupus. There are herbs that say can help with ringing and hearing but they
have not helped me.
Whatever you do try to stay away from loud areas and protect what you have.

In April of 1999...I woke up one morning just like any other day...went to
work...and started hearing a roaring in my right ear... I worked in a noisey
factory and they had been doing alot of maintenance and construction work on
a line close to mine...I thought it was that..By the time I got home..I
could hear nothing in my right ear...Complete hearing loss in my right
ear...DX as Acute Sudden Hearing Loss...No explanation for it...
When they finally got around to dx it...they said it could have been caused
by a virus...Someone said..."Did you have a virus?" Well not that I was
aware of...
I haven't ever been dx with lupus, but have FM...Doctor did say that hardly
ever did it happen billaterlly....Well now after reading here...kinda
concerns me...I always worry about it...I mean in the back of my
mind...especially if I hear any roaring...
Bob I hope your hearing doesn't get any worse...
