Sporadic porphyria cutanea tarda due to haemochromatosis.de Geus HR,
Dees A.
Department of Intensive Care, Erasmus Medical Centre, Rotterdam, the
Netherlands.
Haemochromatosis is a hereditary iron-overload syndrome caused by
increased intestinal iron absorption and characterised by accumulation
of potentially toxic iron in the tissues. Sometimes this disease
presents as a cutanea porphyria. We describe a patient with joint
complaints and blistering skin lesions on sun-exposed skin. After
identifying the porphyria cutanea tarda by urine analysis we found that
the serum activity of uroporphyrinogen decarboxylase (UROD) was normal,
meaning a partial inactivation of UROD in liver tissue due to external
factors. Further investigation showed the homozygous Cys282Tyr missense
mutation and high levels of serum ferritin. It is important to
recognise the symptoms of iron overloading at an early stage because
hereditary haemochromatosis needs to be treated immediately. We
therefore advocate routine sampling of ferritin levels in patients with
unexplained joint complaints.

I am interested in this report as I have been looking for something for
my wife. she had chemo 6 years ago and 3 years ago, developed extreme
sensivity to the sun. No known cause or solution at this stage. I am
sure it is a toxin, but blood tests show normal blood levels of most
common metals etc.
Any ideas??
thanks

>>developed extreme sensivity to the sun.<<
It depends I suppose on what kind of .. "sensitivity to the sun" .. you
are talking about .. but not .. really ..
Radiation leads to a decrease of antioxidants in the body ..
Radiation is just oxidation ..
Soooo .. I would increase my intake of antioxidant rich foods .. and
decrease my intake of foods which .. decrease .. antioxidants.
Uveitis / sensitivity to the sun in your .. eyes .. has been shown to
be linked to a decrease in antioxidants .. ie: "oxidant thrust " ..

Same with sensitivity to the sun .. hence the addition of antioxidants
to topical preparations for the skin to prevent sunburn ..

It seems the "phosphate groups" mentioned in this study are simply the
ingredients found in vegetable oil / lecithin and therefore .. in
theory .. vegetable oil rich in phosphate groups applied liberally to
the skin should lead to decreased oxidation and increased antioxidants
IN the body / your wife.
