Okay guys I need help. I went to the dentist yesterday. My teeth are perfect
but.....!
The bone under the teeth has deteriorated. I'm being sent to a specialist
and my dentist was talking about bone grafting to save my teeth. (Okay, I'm
freaked out!)
Today I went to my doc and I told him about the dental problem. He said that
my dry mouth is probably responsible for the problem. The gums dry out
especially when I sleep. So the questions is: isn't there a spray I can use?
Darn I wish I could find old posts when I want them, I know this has been
discussed before. Then another person asked about dry mouth today. What can
we use?
Help!!

I lost my teeth at age 43 due to this same problem. There is a saliva
agent that is like a mouthwash type agent, you actually just squirt it
in your mouth, called salivart. I cant remember if you need a rx or
not. There is a pill that forces the body to produce more saliva, I
cant find it right now. You would have to get it from a dr., anyway.
I have had to quit work and all my books are packed.
I wrote an education handout for my dentist yrs ago that he uses. He
wasnt very familiar with Lupus and started seeing rapid dental decay
in teh few patients he had. I can post it here if anyone wants it or
mail it to you. My email is chattie@iglou.com
I will continue to look for the name of the pill. Its used mostly in
patients with sjorgens syndrome.
May have had to quit the nursing job but will never quit being a nurse
:)
Worked in Rehab as a nurse practitioner the past few yrs and that was
my true calling. Fit in with all those folks with disability etc :)

I believe the name of the med is 'salagen'....
Salagen Tablets are an oral therapy that stimulate the salivary and lacrimal glands, increasing production of saliva and tears. Salagen is indicated for treatment of:
a.. Symptoms of dry mouth in patients with Sjögren's syndrome
b.. Symptoms of dry mouth from salivary gland hypofunction caused by radiotherapy for cancer of the head and neck

Hi Bev, I have that problem too but found using biotene mouth wash as well
as biotene toothpaste helps also.
The biotene helps get rid of bacteria which harbors in there. There is
oral gel as well as the other stuff the girls mentioned.
Sugar free gum is good to chew because it stimulated saliva and NO sugar in
it. These are tricks we find out later after LOL.
The biotene taste good and does NOT bite...do not use something like
listerine, you will be dancing in the bath roon. Even with dry mouth..
http://www.oasisdrymouth.com/?rotation=13708842&banner=40017631 is a new
product, but never tried it. Maybe that will help also. You can read
about it.
other helps
What can I do?
a.. Sip water or sugarless drinks often.
b.. Avoid drinks with caffeine, such as coffee, tea, and some sodas.
Caffeine can dry out the mouth.
c.. Sip water or a sugarless drink during meals. This will make chewing
and swallowing easier. It may also improve the taste of food.
d.. Chew sugarless gum or suck on sugarless hard candy to stimulate saliva
flow; citrus, cinnamon or mint-flavored candies are good choices.
e.. Don't use tobacco or alcohol. They dry out the mouth.
f.. Be aware that spicy or salty foods may cause pain in a dry mouth.
g.. Use a humidifier at night
this is the best though

I have to use dry mouth toothpaste, mouthwash, and spray before bed.
Biotene has one of each, and Sensodyne has a new line called Oasis that
has mouthwash and mouthspray. I get them at Wal Mart or Target or my
Pharmacy. There are other sprays you can also get over the internet.
Good Luck!
