Does anyone here have a child (or was a child) who was diagnosed with Discoid Lupus at age 3 or under?

My friend is just about going crazy because a dermatologist (at Kaiser)
has diagnosed her daughter with possible Discoid Lupus.  (She's 2 years
old.)  Doctor seems to think it's no big deal, and that she should just
use sunblock.  My friend then did some research on the internet, saw
some of the pictures of scarring and hairloss, and read that she could
later develop Systemic Lupus;  Thus the freaking out.  She tested
negative for systemic, but they didn't want to do a biopsy of the welts
because they were all on
her little face.  The pediatricians she has seen have diagnosed various
things.  (Food allergies, eczema, etc.)  If you have any advice on
steps she should take, she would greatly appreciate it.

The rash on her face has been appearing on and off for quite a few
months. There is absolutely no scarring when they go away.  The last
outbreak occurred right after applying a different sunblock than usual
(Coppertone).  Her other outbreaks have occurred out of the blue.  She
practically had to beg to get the dermatologist to schedule a chemical
allergy test.  Food allergy tests all came out negative.  Are there any
specific places she could go to get reliable information? Thank you in
advance for any advice you can give.

Tia,

I don't really know much about this, but it seems to me that the first
step is getting a doctor that cares about this child.  If the mother is
frustrated with this physician and is able to, financially...check out
the childrens hospital maybe??  Childrens hospitals often have outside
financial support also, so they may be more apt to do tests when some
doctors balk because of insurance or money issues.

I hope someone here can help you.

Tia,
I don't know anything about the discoid Lupus either and hopefully someone
on the group has some experience.

Like Maggie said if there is a way to get her to a specialist I think that
is very important.  Most of us on the group have problems with sun
sensitivity and most of us limit our time in the sun and always with as
strong a sunblock as possible.

I just don't understand a doctor who believes a two year old who has
diagnoised discoid lupus thinking that it is no big deal.  I would be
looking for another doctor ASAP.

Hugs,

Lupus is hardly ever seen in small children. And discoid lupus is easily
diagnosed with a biopsy. I don't think they take much for the biopsy just a
little scrape across the lesion - nothing that should leave scaring.

I'd try to get the child to a children's hospital and find a pediatrician
connected to that hospital who specializes in autoimmune diseases!!!!!

At this point I'd put my bet on allergies or even psoriasis/eczema. I'm not
a doctor, just a mom and a grandmom. But I can't imagine a doctor saying
discoid lupus is no big deal in children.

Mom and grandmom's opinions rank high on my list.  They have valuable
experiences on their side.  I always go to my mom first for advice.
Although, I don't always take it =)

To clarify: The doctor didn't actually "say" it was no big deal, but
minimized it greatly.  It wasn't until she went home and researched it
that my friend realized how serious it could be.  Maybe the doctor
didn't want to freak her out, but that's what ended up happening
anyway.

She's still hoping its just an allergy at this point.  A chemical
allergy test is scheduled for next week.

Anyway, thank you all for your help.  I will pass on your suggestions.

Tia
