Sjogren's Syndrome:
For those who have it- question please.

Did it come on slowly?
or suddenly (one day was fine and the next problem)?

If suddenly, what's the trigger please?

Thanks and hugs

For me it was just 'there' in my life quite suddenly... and dx'd just as quickly cause I had an opthamologist appt. and it got noticed with my eyes being the worst symptomatically speaking; they were puffy, bloodshot and when he did the litmus paper test there was NO tearing at all
........ they still are the worst problem for me with the sjogrens and the punctal plugs made a huge difference for my quality of life!
The trigger..... I just don't know that it was a trigger exactly, but I do know that I was taking injectible demerol (giving myself shots at the time) for some episode or another post hospitalization.... and it very suddenly was the cause of my eyes drying 'right out' each time I needed the drug and because it was so painful, like sandpaper eyelids on my dry dry eyeballs that I actually quit the shots and went for a different oral med just for the relief in my poor eyes! To heck with what I was taking the shots for lol!  I use my eyes for everything I do!! reading novels, the PC, crochet, tv, movies etc....nevermind everyday chores and 'seeing' my way around <g>!! It was that bad that I wanted instant relief and started pouring in the artificial tears and gel and every other eye product available!!
Triggers now are just like for lupus I find.... stress, sun, overdoing, illness (like the flue last weekend that both MOTH and I got within a day of each other for 5 days straight!!); anything that triggers lupus also sets off sjogrens.
that is my story anyhow... hope it helps?
hugs,
Shelagh

Thanks Shelagh.
I guess no one else (currently reading has Sjogren's) - you're the only one who replied, so I won't get a good collection of how it affects each person.
I was asking because a man, on another newsgroup, said his (dryness) came on suddenly and it affects more than his eyes (anywhere in his body where there's mucous).  he has no diagnosis - he's working on it.  Thanks bunches for your reply.

I don't have it, but know many who do (have the symptoms, that is, with
or without a formal diagnosis). None have talked of a sudden onset, more
of a gradual realisation that having ones damp parts take on the
consistency of sandpaper is a problem that has crept up over years.

Is there such a thing as drug-induced Sjogrens? Ask him if he started
any prescription medicine within say the previous month. Ditto for
recreational substances, ethnic medicines, et hoc genus omne.

He was last year and/or ongoing but he dates it back to a year before - one
specific day.
Thanks for your input.

I don't think so.  What did you have in mind for recreational?  I'm curious
and totally uninformed.

I very vaguely recall reading that cannabis can have a drying-up effect.

You are right about 'pot' and most opioids having a drying effect; which I found out the hard way... the demerol injections just sucked the tears right out of my eye orbs!!
They are used pre op for that reason as well as relaxation for the patient... they like for the patient to be 'dry' pre anaesthetic and apparently the meds not only dope the patients but also dry their mucosal tissues like sjogrens does... including the eye's tearing abilities...

sorry didn't get to reply as fast as usual LOL.

Mine came on slowly with feelings of eye strain, so I backed off paper work
as well as computer. But sigh it didn't make a difference. the the sun made
me feel like my eyes were sore too, and itching started. This all was slow
progress of a few months that I really noticed. then went to the doc.
Like shelagh, MY litmus test show zip. I had nothing there so peeling it out
of my eye was a surprise to me.  Since on restasis, it is much much better
but I certainly can tell when it is windy more, and IF I forget my second
drop in for the day.  Sun is aweful but I wear prescription sun glasses and
man what a difference. I even sometimes wear them inside a store or home,
works for me. I forget I have them on. They take out the glare and all and
boy worth every penny I paid....

hope this is helping you J
Let me know what is up ok??
