My daughter is 16 and had mono last March, had an enlarged spleen till
september.  During this time she has gained 15 lbs, but was active
playing softball and running when not too fatigued.  During the last
year her symptoms were fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, sun
sensitivity, face stays red, shortness of breath when exercising,
glands in neck are swollen, stays hot a lot, and irregular periods.  I
asked her doctor to let her try armour thyroid since she had some of
the symptoms of hypothyroidism and it helped at first, but even after
increase of medicine, she didn't feel any better. Although, her periods

are more regular.   She is on 60 mg. of armour thyroid and cannot lose
weight even though she is on a special diet.  She doesn't drink any
diet drinks, loves bottled water and eats very healthy.  Last week, she

had to give up playing softball, since it was too demanding.  My
question is, could this be her mono coming back or is it still the
thyroid or could it be lupus even thou she hasn't had any joint
problems.  What is causing her to have shortness of breath?   One more
thing, she has been through a lot of changes in her life recently we
moved 2 years ago and has had some anxiety with that, but does have
friends and seems ok.

No one here is qualified to make a diagnosis.  You may receive suggestions,
personal experiences, etc.

If your daughter is having problems breathing, I would think that it's vital
to find out why.  Have you consulted a pulmonologist?

I would think if I wasn't breathing properly, I would be fatigued as my body
isn't receiving enough oxygen.

Periods.... consulted an ob/gyn?
Thyroid.... endocrinologist?
Sounds like all your daughter's problems are beyond the scope of the current
doctor.

www.lupus.org is the place to start looking for lupus.  You'll find a list
of criteria.  Check it out.  If she meets X number, seek the help of a
rheumatologist.

I hope your daughter isn't sick with anything serious and it's easy to
diagnose and clear up.  Good luck
Nicole

she has seen a gynocologist for her periods, they are better since on
the armour, but before they were irregular.  she has breathing problems
only when exercising, but the nurse at school said that she wasn't
wheezing, so will have to have this checked out.  she has been to two
endocrinologist (Texas Childrens and an adult endo) and they  said that
she wasn't hypothyroid, but they didn't know what was wrong that maybe
she was depressed (no signs of depression) or the mono.she was tested
for 24 hour urine for cortisol.  Her autoimmune thyroid test was
somewhat high. the gyn was the only one that would even let her try the
armour, but did feel because of her symptoms that she was somewhat
hypothyroid.

I take Armour even tho all my blood tests say everything is normal.  My dr
feels I'm hypothyroid and doesn't completely rely on the blood results.

Have your daughter keep a diary of all her health issues with lots of
details (weather, time of day, etc).  Keep searching for a doctor.   It
could take many many doctors and months/years to figure out what's wrong.
Don't give up.
Being told she's depressed is classic.  Doctor can't find out what's wrong
so it's in your head.  A lot of lupus and fibro patients are told they're
depressed despite their symptoms.
Don't get me wrong.... depression is common and can mimic certain symptoms
but it's not the answer for everything.

Good point. Adding to it, some effects (the classic one is
sun-sensitivity) occur a day or three after the exposure.

What exactly does this mean?  She puts on sunscreen, but it doesn't
help much.  Also, her face is always a little red, but when exercising
it gets blood red.  Her lower arms get red too.  Do you know if this is
her medicine or thyroid or possibly lupus?  Thanks, Kathy

thanks for the info, I'm new to all of this and it's great to have
someone else who is going thru this to talk to.  I have kept a partial
journal, but know will keep a more detailed one now.  thanks so much,
and if there is anyone in the Houston area that has a good doctor, let
me know!  Kathy
