Hi Everyone,

Can anyone tell me about this drug - the good, bad & ugly.
My doctor wants me to start taking it. I have had discoid lupus for 18 years
and am having a flare that has lasted over a year. No problems with joint
pain, just rash/spots.

Thank you.

I'm taking 400 mg and I havent noticed any side effects, but i'm also
not sure if it's doing any good either (I have SLE). Apparently, people
who take over 400mg might experience some vision problems.

I have been taking plaquenil for about 18 months...800mg per day. So
far, no problems with my eyes and my flares have been off and on. I
have a myroad of autoimmune issues - SLE and Discoid Lupus, Rheumatoid
Arthritis, Scleroderma, Crest Syndrome, Hashimoto's Disease,
Myosititis, Vitiligo, Sjogrens, etc. This is on top of Thalassemia,
which has morphed ( almost impossibly enough ) to Hemochromatosis. It's
been working for me, although I do have flares of one sort or another,
off and on. Before Plaquenil. I was taking Bextra. They have also
prescribed Prednisone, but I am saying no, no, no.

I've been taking 400mg a day for SLE for about 7 years and I haven't
noticed any side effects from it. You have to have your eyes checked
every 6 months to make sure it isn't effecting your vision. If it
effects your eyes the drs need to catch it early so the damage won't be
perment. Plaquenil was one of the first meds my rheumetologist tried on
me. It worked almost immediately for my pain, aches, and movement. I
don't know if it helped with my skin. I think the SPF 65 and staying
away from fluorescent and halogen light did that. But I do still get
the sun spots. I would say it's worth trying.

Ditto, but for about 5 1/2 years. My facial rash is still a barometer
for when I need to stop working and go home, but the Plaquenil has been
God-sent for the rest of the symptoms. I DO have increasing problems
seeing, but the eye doctors insist it's normal middle-aged eye changes.

Prednisone  is a dirty word but at times it is the only way to get over
a flare.  I fight taking it every time but after weeks of being
miserable start taking it again and life is worth living ....  They
are giving it in smaller doses to start now  and it might be worth a
try.  I've taken plaquenil for about 21 years and it holds a lot of
flare ups from getting out of control.             ruth

I've been on Plaquenil 200mgs bid for almost 8 yrs now.
You need to see an ophthalmologist (NOT an optometrist) before starting the
drug and then every 6 months.  Rarely are there problems but the checkups
help to prevent any long term problems.
