Talk about disastrous holidays. Oh Boy what a New Year's it's been. Our
granddaughter's father was supposed to pick them up the day before Christmas
& bring them back here Christmas Eve (Santa Claus comes here in Coventry)
but the dad didn't show. No one could get in touch with him; he didn't
answer his cell. Then we had them last weekend because we don't go out for
New Year's (I'm lucky to make it till 10:00) & Missy, their mom, wanted to
go out for the 1st time in 15 years. The next morning we got a call from a
friend of their father (Doug) who was concerned because they couldn't
contact him either. Well, the friend found Doug, the dad, in his house in
Delroy (middle Ohio) dead with a gunshot thru the heart. He's threatened
many times in the past & came close a few times, but this time he really did
it. The girls are a mess, Missy's a mess & so are Paul & I. Calling hours
are today. HOW can someone shoot themself in the heart with a 22?! We're
still not entirely convinced it was a suicide but that's what the hobunk
cops down there said happened. The girls are going to grief counseling, free
of charge thanks to their school district but everybody's blaming themselves
even tho Doug abandoned them in the spring for another woman & has had 4
more since then. But at least, the attorneys & cops down there now know that
we weren't making it up when we said Doug needed to be evaluated & Ellie &
Chloe needed supervised visitation. Statistics show that if someone is that
f**d up, they often take out their family before they do themselves in. He
was supposed to have them that weekend & thank God he had enough sense not
to pick them up. When he didn't show, the girls were hysterical, crying for
him but we just thought he was being his normal irresponsible self. Well, I
guess in a way he was. He was in the house, dead, for at least a week but
we'll probably never know for sure how long he laid there before he died or
if it was a suicide or homicide. There are so many things running around my
head; I'll never be able to make the same cookies we made that day because
it'll remind them, let alone just the holiday season in general. Those poor
poor girls.

Candi,
I am so sorry to hear your disaster!!!! My heart aches for you, your
daughter and her children. All of you will be in my thoughts and prayers!
What a shame that the mental health was ignored and he didn't get any help.
I can't imagine a self inflicted gunshot to the heart either...maybe it is
just easier for them to rule suicide than it is to figure it out! Not sure
if homicide would be easier for the children to accept than their Dad
killing himself or not...but if it would be then let them have that as a
possibility.
Hugs,
Sherry

Hi Sherry, thanks. I think a homicide would be easier to accept because it
would alleviate any guilt that the girls are undoubtedly having. Thinking,
you know, if I had said or done something different, been more well behaved,
or whatever, then maybe he wouldn't have done it. It's a natural reaction
for suicide victims' family members & friends to blame themselves. But I
think you're right, the police don't want to figure it out.

How much detail have the police given you? Someone should be able
to explain why they decided on suicide rather than homicide. Unhappily
it does sound like suicide, but "suicide prone" isn't as convincing an
argument as details of the circumstances.

I'm sorry about this tragedy.
Let the kids grieve (keep them out/away from these discussions), unless they're
teens or older.
They have to continue their routine. And have a "soft place to land". (someone
stable to keep the household going and someone to greet them and ask them how
school went, and support their friendships and extracurricular actiivities.Life
has to go on for them. It's the only way, in my opinion, for them to stay sane
and balanced.
I'm sorry, it's awful A friend of mine was affected by somehting like this. The
mother's still a mess, but she was before. The kids have gotten on (with their
lives) pretty well. They grieved, they buried him, they moved on with their own
lives and happiness.
J - hoping same happens with this/your family

Hi J, I'm the soft one that they can come to, & they know it. The girls are
coming tomorrow for the weekend. Their mother's a soft one too. We found out
today that Dead Dad Doug (you've gotta find humor somewhere - sorry) tried
to shoot his newest girlfriend, then went after a previous one with a
shotgun. I just can't believe it's not been on the news here! Weird. Candi

Actually maybe it's a good thing (sadly). Sounds like he was working his way
backward through people. good thing he didn't get to kids and mother..
I expect they don't put on news to protect family (and kids).
How'd the weekend go, candi?
Hugs
