Plant-based diet, serum fatty acid profile, and free radicals in
postmenopausal women: the diet and androgens (DIANA) randomized trial.

dei Tumori, Milan, Italy.

High calorie and fat consumption and the production of free radicals
are two major mechanistic pathways between diet and disease. In this
study we evaluated the effect of a plant-based diet poor in animal fat
and rich in (n-3) fatty acids on fatty acids of serum phospholipids and
on the production of reactive oxygen metabolites (ROMs). One hundred
and four healthy female postmenopausal volunteers were recruited and
randomized to a dietary intervention or a control group. Dietary
intervention included a program of food education and biweekly common
meals for 18 weeks. When the intervention and control groups were
compared, it was seen that dietary intervention resulted in a
significant reduction of saturated fatty acids (-1.5%) and a
significant increase in (n-3) fatty acids (+20.6%), in particular
docosahexaenoic acid (+24.8%). We observed that arachidonic acid
decreased (-7.7%), while (n-6) fatty acids did not, and the (n-3)/(n-6)
polyunsaturated ratio increased significantly (+24.1%). As expected,
ROMs decreased significantly in the intervention group (-6%). The
results indicated that a plant-based diet can improve the serum fatty
acid profile and decrease ROMs production. These results suggest that a
plant-based diet may reduce the body's exposure to oxidative stress.

I wondered who could possibly be in Tommy's camp, so I did a quck
Google search.

Yep, we've got another one here. She's treatening to sue members of
other groups.  A real nutcase.

Figures.

Sheesh, now why didn't I think of this when our troll showed her face
again?

I'm going to take a page out of this group's book and write a FAQ about
our troll if she appears (hope not!) again.

Strange how the much the ASMS troll and this one have in common.
Sounds to me like both have the same illness, and it's not the one the
NGs are about.

Lawsuit threats, delusions of conspiracies against them. . .and I'd bet
my bottom dollar that this Diana creature has written ugly backchannel
rants as well.

Actually, it's not funny; it's very sad that someone is compelled to
engage in such behavior on a support group.  And it's also sad that
they drive people who need support away. . .

I should write more about trolls; hey, this could be a bestseller!

Tom,

I see just a mere post to you sets off more attacks so I'll make this
brief and to the point.

I do enjoy reading the pub med articles you post.

A few over the years I passed on to my sister. I wanted to say thanks
for posting those that were of help to her and to let you know she died
a few days after surgery. But she was happy to read anything medical
that related to her conditions.

So thanks again, Tom -- one never knows what will help who.

Enjoy the sunsets and sunrises,

And I'll make this even briefer:  get the hell out of here.

We KNOW who you are now, so get lost.  The game;s up.

Let us correct the misleading subject line.  It was a plant based diet of
a specific kind which included low saturated fats and specific kinds of
fat.  To show how this might work in the real world, the world's number
one place for the metabolic syndrome which is related to high oxidative
stress also consumes an almost entirely plant based diet, but one
different then the specific one in the study.  Attempts to over generalize
can lead to incorrect conclusions and specific lab results fail in the lab
of the real world.

<<

You're .. right ..

It should have been titled .. "vegetarian .. diet .. leads to decreased
oxidative stress .." ..

Now let me explain HOW .. that .. decision came about ..

No animal fats .. no meat = vegetarian diet ..

Heh .. heh ..

So .. I guess .. technically .. plant based diet .. IS .. correct ..

<<snip>>
we evaluated the effect of a plant-based diet poor in animal fat
and rich in (n-3) fatty acids on fatty acids of serum phospholipids
<<snip>>

Which would go right along with the studies which show meat based diets
RAISE .. oxidative stress levels ..

Need a couple of .. cites .. ?

For your .. files .. ?

It'll give you time to .. falsify .. them ..?

So that means vegetarians don't get MS, right?

WRONG.

Explain how I got it, then.

Or get the hell out of here.

""vegetarian .. diet .. leads to decreased
oxidative stress "

Sorry, this is not an improvement.  It was a specific plant based diet,
low saturated fat and other things.  It still does not account for the
metabolic syndrome and related oxidative stress being highest in an area
where an almost complete plant based diet is standard.  The study was
about a high calorie diet and a high saturated fat intake.  A plant based
diet was an obvious choice to control the high saturated fat intake part.
