Hands falling asleep, numb and hot flashes

Hello, I've been having troubles sleeping for the past few months. As
soon as I get comfortable my arms and hands tingle, and fall asleep and
are in pain when they start un-numbing again. It's rather frustrating
and painful and weird. Then when i finally manage to get back to sleep
making sure my arms don't go numb I start sweating, hot flashes just
burning! Then I get so so cold if I take the covers off because I'm
damp and then its like a cold sweat. There's no winning. Too hot or too
cold and numb arms and hands. What the heck. I'm losing important
sleep. Is this Lupus related? What is causing this? Is my blood
pressure rising at night? Definately not menopause I'm only 27, geesh
atleast I hope that's not it. Anyone else have this or know anything to
help.
Thank you all! Jacquie

The hand numbness sounds like Raynaud's syndrome/phenomenon.
It happens to me a lot, too.  You could try sleeping with woolen
mittens or gloves to keep your hands warm (I've done that and
it usually works, but these days I find it more convenient to use
my cat as a hand-warmer). The thing about Raynaud's is that it
can go with other conditions, so it's not a sure sign of lupus.  If you
do a lot of typing or work with hand-held power tools you might
want to look into carpal-tunnel syndrome.  Also, have you taken
your temperature when you wake up in one of these sweats?

And Taylor will tell you to look here:

http://www.northeastlupus.org.uk

for a list of many other lupus symptoms.

Hi, thank u, I never thought of carpal tunnel syndrome, I do have
teninitis I think, my arms, wrists and elbows ache all the time!!! Just
pain. I'll ask the doc about that possibility. I thought Raynauds just
made your fingers white. Does it cause the circulation to get cut off
in yuor arms, hands too? Cause mine don't get cold when I sleep they
just go numb and tingle like falling asleep.
Also I heard Raynauds causes your fingers to go white when cold, is it
possible to also go white when exposed to heat? My toes go completely
white when I step in the tub and then burn as they adjust to the heat
and then get really red. Same thing with the cold.
Thank u, Jacquie

Raynaud's shouldn't affect the arms, as far as I know.  What you
describe sounds like some sort of physical injury--muscle strain
or pinched nerves.

Here's a site with some information about carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS)
and other repetitive-motion injuries (RMIs):

http://nursing.fullerton.edu/Orientations/module2/m_2compsafety.htm

The next time it happens, notice whether or not your little finger
goes numb.  If it doesn't, then CTS is at the top of your list.  Doing
a lot of computer work could be the cause; if so, that site suggests
a few simple things that should help.

I've seen my hands turn a sort of dark, dull red a few times.
Usually when they go numb I'm in bed with the lights out
and my glasses off.  The few times it's happened elsewhere
I've been too busy trying to warm them up to notice much
about color changes.  Warm/hot water shouldn't cause a
problem with Raynaud's, though (in Raynaud's, the capillaries
react to cold by constricting, which cuts off the circulation).

Sounds like you've got nerve compression affecting your arm. Might need an
EMG?
Mine's at the elbow. The left is worse, so sometimes I have to sleep more
on my right side.
I sleep better on my left side but oh well.
Carpal tunnel; wear night wrist splints. It won't fix the tendenitis, but
might help some of it.

My brother had the same problem. At the time, he was sleeping on his back.
He had a pillow on each side and laid his arms out straight on the pillows.
He said that helped.
Do you have lung problems or apnea?
I could see low oxygen causing that too.
It has to be checked while a person is sleeping.

Raynauds: avoid temperature extremes.
So run some hot water, add some cold; then get in.
Then I add more hot to feel. Or I let the hot dribble to keep the bath
warm.
That's what works for me.

BTW, J, how is your brother doing now? Did he ever get into see a rheumy or
get a referral to the mainland rheumatologists? Is he still living in the
interior?
just curious...hugs, Shelagh

No recent news. I'll email him next week. It's his birthday.

No

Yes, as far as I know.
If I don't hear back from him, I'll either email his daughter or call.

Thank u J, I just did a search under EMG, that looks like somethign I
really should have done, I do have a problem constant with sore wrists
likely from work, using the computer too much etc. I hope the doc looks
into that. I'm making notes on everything and all that you all suggest
so when I see the specialist this summer I'll have a better
understanding.
Thanks! Jacquie

OK, nerve thing sounds right. Peripheral neuropathy is usually worse at
night for some reason. Raynaud's usually doesn't cause pain. Does it feel
like shards of glass bouncing around inside? People can get PN for unknown
reasons; look it up. There's a really good PN group. Once, mine was so bad I
was walking with a cane. Thank God it only lasted for a few months - then
resolved itself. Neurontin helped too. Candi

are you sleeping with a heat releaser? Some people are hot "ovens" to sleep
with?
Either flannel or cotton bed sheets; absorb sweat; don't throw sheets off
of you.

Maybe a gynae appointment is in order to make sure nothing's up with your
ovaries. I think they do bloodwork and an ultrasound (but not exactly
sure).

So if there's no other explanation,  Sounds peri-menopausal to me.
http://www.project-aware.org/Experience/perimenopause.shtml
Some clinicians maintain that perimenopause can last for as long as 5 to 15
years, and refer to perimenopause as that period which is a 3 to 4 year
span just before menopause. Either way, many women experience more symptoms
during perimenopause than after menopause. Because this often happens at an
age between 35 and 45, many women's symptoms are overlooked or ignored by
their healthcare providers.[]

If that's what's happening, you need to talk to someone about prevention of
bone thinning.
I think I heard, that the longer the period of perimenopause the worse the
risk for bone thinning and fractures.
Get prepared.

Boy I am slow with this one JQ.

When I was first starting to get sick, I was having terrible hand pain
along with the joints, hot flashes and just like you mentioned.  all of it.
For me "I" thought it was menopausal for sure since at the middle age of
50, I figures ok this is what it is. But I was also experiencing terrible
fatigue along with this.  My hands would go numb while sleeping and wake me
up to excruciating pain.  So much so that when I finally saw the doctor my
rheumy, he said it was just arthritis.  HMMM never should of trusted that
one.
But it continued and got worse to the point of having to wear hand splints.
Sweats?  OMG it was aweful.  I finally got a decent doc in Cleveland and
was diagnosed via numerous blood tests and finding.  LUPUS>  My sed rate
was sky high along with lots of other tests. So when placed on medrol all
of it tempered down.

I do note that when I have a flair, I too get the sweats bad along with
that pain.  I was diagnoses with Raynaud's but my hand pain was from
inflammation as well as neuropathy and carpal tunnel syndrome later.

So this is related, and you need to mention all this stuff to a good
doctor.  Keep tabs of it yourself.  Write in a journal all your symptoms
and show the doc, keep a record yourself and relate it to HOW you are
feeling.   If we do a lot of the docs work (wink wink) then maybe the docs
will help us out more with meds, and such to control lupus better as well
as Mixed connnective diseases.

good luck, want more, email me

Hi Janers! This is great info, the doctors will definately listen now
that I have so much info from u all. Sometimes better to talk to
similar people who have experienced Lupus rather than the doctors that
just study it, both are very helpful. It's good to know I'm not the
only. You're right I probably have carpal tunnel like u too. I sure
wonder why the night sweats. I shall start a journal like u and
prepare. The doctor I've been waiting to see for months finally called
and squeezed me in in July, which is great, no more putting my life on
hold. i thought I'd have to wait til Fall. All my research will
definatly come in helpful with everyone's advice on here.
Thank u so much! Jacquie
