high count sheets that fit?

it may seem OT, but I think a lot of us have problems with the "Princess and
the Pea" syndrome either due to the lupus or to Fibro.  I've had less
problems the past two years (Plaquenil?) but still have times where anything
but the softest material feels like sandpaper on my skin.  I don't wake up
with my leg on fire from a crease in the sheets anymore..

but that may be because the *#&$*(&#$ sheets don't really fit and are
stretched so tight that they don't crease.  They do however, pop off at
inconvenient moments (get your minds out of the gutter!  I'm talking about
when I'm falling asleep and the elastic corner slaps me in the face.)

so... I have a mattress about 14" thick and though the sheets I have were
supposedly for oversized mattresses, they are just too darn small.

If you have a 300-count or better addiction  - where do you shop for decent
soft sheets?  This is something I'm willing to spend the money on now.. in
the past I kept going for Kmart or the like ("even fits mattresses up to 16"
thick" BULL!) because of cost but comfort and convenience are fast winning
this battle.

all suggestions appreciated.

Hi KC, For years I used mattress clips . They're sturdy, durable and cheap.
The shapes vary but they're all about the same price and work on the same
theory,
attaches the corners (and'or sides) of the sheets to the beading of either
mattress, depending on the size of the sheets.  Department store - bedding
department should know about them

There's also suspenders. I haven't tried them.

<snipped info about clips and suspenders>

thanks, J. I forgot about those.  They wouldn't work in this case - really.
the force required to secure them is too great.

but i think they're a good idea even for sheets that fit properly because
those darn things never really want to stay put even then.  I've seen them
at Linens n' things down the street so I'll check into it.

Thx for the info.  I've never seen these... I've used the elastic straps but
they don't work for me.  I'm going to check these clips out for my bottom
sheet.

Kcat,

I saw some 500 count sheets at Kohls. They also have 400 as well. I do have
the same addiction as you. I slept once on 500 count and I can not go back
to the less count sheets for nothing.. Too scratchy. I also saw some at JC
Penny, but they wanted a pretty penny for those. I think they are online
www.jcpenney.com.

Thanks Rhonda.  Yeah, what I have is 300 or 320.  which have, over the
years, gotten quite comfy.  But we have a new mattress and they're just too
darn small and I'd rather start out with something comfortable than have to
"break it in".  I found some 600 ct sheets with an overstock seller.  we'll
see how well that works.  I'm a little leery of sheets being claimed to be
listed at $300 for a set and getting them for $80.  But I figured it was
worth checking out.  Kohls has good stuff.  and good prices.  so I'll check
there if the on-line purchase doesn't work out.

thanks much.

We have the same problem.  We have a thick mattress then I put a visco
elastic topper and feather bed on top.
I put one sheet on the mattress then a separate sheet on the featherbed and
topper becuase I couldn't find any deep enough.
Be careful when purchasing "high thread count" sheets... there's a way the
manufacture can lie about the actual thread count... they say they're 600
count when actually 250... or something like that.

I've purchased sheets from overstock.com and have been happy.

Many of these sheets claim to fit 18 inch mattresses.

Lands End and only Lands End! I will never own sheets from any place else
again. Their deep pockets just slip right on the bed. (We also have one of
the new pillow top beds.)We use flannel year round because the flannel will
wick away perspiration in the summer and keep us warm in the winter. And
they are so soft! I can actually make the bed myself without any help. Even
my husband swears these are a breeze to put on the bed. Same thing with Land
End's mattress cover. Yes, they are expensive but worth every penny! I use
either the highest quality sheet or the next to the highest.

I'll email the page to you.

Hi KCat! (aka "Princess")

Have you tried jersey sheets.  I have two sets, both are black (because I
like black), but they come in many colors.  They are called "T-sheets" and
are the softest, most comfortable things in the world.  There are drawbacks
to everything.  With the "T-Sheets" it seems that they get holes (no doubt
kitty-inflicted) which turn into runs if not caught.  But worth the sensual
soft experience!

Wishing you comfort,

Mair

Oh!  I meant to mention, they have REALLY deep pockets, too.

yeah - too stretchy which meant creases which meant me waking up screaming
in pain.  but for softness to-the-touch, they were wonderful.  Of course,
the ones I bought were cheap so who's to say a nicer set wouldn't have
worked better.  Hubby didn't like them though.

:-)

My brother and his wife love the Land's End flannel sheets.  But they live
in a place that actually gets cold for several months out of the year. :P

Gee, Princess!

I am sorry to hear that you are having so  much pain!  I get that when I (or
the cat) touch my "tender points" (new kitty has not learned where my tender
points are), so I know the quality of pain you are talking about.

I do hope that you find your sheets.  I used to pin mine to the mattress
(pull over the corner and then pin to the side of rhe mattress) until I
found these, that really seem to work for me.

Best of luck to you,

Mair

fortunately, I haven't had it in a while.  The first time it happened - ages
ago now - i woke up feeling like someone had put a hot iron againt my leg.
Quite literally woke up with a scream and sobs.  The crease in my skin
stayed for a long time.  The problem seems to be most noticeable when I'm
retaining fluids.  When this started happening I had some pitting edema.  In
recent months, I've had very little trouble with that so less trouble with
sheet creases.  But the thicker the sheet, the greater the risk.

the biggee though is that I have to compromise for the comfort level of two
folks and hubby likes nice "crisp cotton" sheets.  No satin, no flannel, no
knit.  :)

pinning is not out of the question. :)

Ok, no flannel, so use the Land's End deep pocket regular sheets.

Hello KCat - this is Jackie from California.  It's been almost a year since
I posted.  Just decided to see what's going on and caught your question.
We, too, have an extra thick mattress and the same problems.  I just bought
300 count, 100% Egyptian cotton sheets from JCPenney which fit up to a 20"
mattress.  Their set carries the "Sealy" name and has an extra large top
sheet so that you can tuck it in and still have it reach your shoulders.
The bottom sheet has cotton/spandex end panels which I found took a lot of
strength to put on - like the mattress pads but not quite so tight.  In
future I'll have to have my husband put it on.  They do stay smooth and in
place so are worth the effort.  I'm pleased with them and will probably get
a second set.  They are expensive - $80 for the set on sale.  List price is
$140.  If you are interested, they are on page 32 of the Home Sale catalog
Vol. U-05 which expires Aug. 16, 2005.
Happy Hunting!

Thanks Jackie.  I'll take a look at them.

Jackie,
Glad to see you!  I have wondered what has happened to you as well as Judith
and a few other Southern CA people.

Have you discovered that with your Egyptian cotton sheets that you sleep
warmer?  I also bought some that were 600 I think and boy oh boy could I
kick back the blankets even in the cold winter wioth no fire in the stove.

How have you been doing?

Once again glad you stopped in to see waht was happening here.

Hugs,
Sherry
