It's been a while....needless to say that my sister in law is sick again.
She's looking like she's got Meningitis again.  We'll know more in a couple
of days.  They did the spinal tap today (at least this time they did it
before they started treating her with antibiotics..so now they might be able
to come up with a solid diagnosis).  But, I've got a question.  We went to
see her lupus/rheumy specialist a couple of days ago, before she got sick
again.  She asked about this new drug (Meth).  I was wondering if anyone has
an opinion about it vs. the ever popular prednisone.  Or even if it's as
effective.  She hasn't seen her family doc yet, so she's not taking it yet,
but with her in the hospital, I'm really interested in finding out what is
best for her.  Her immune system is crap.  I don't want her doing anything
that's going to make her worst.  Thanks for your advice...I appreciate all
of your help...you guys helped a lot the last time.  It's nice to know there
are people around who can understand my confusion and frustration.

Hi Karla, sorry I am so late with this.

I have been on cortisone for over 10 yrs and seriously it is doing a number
on my bones and other things.  My rheumy decided, much to my NOT wanting
it, to put me on methotrexate.  I have been taking it by injection due to
the esophagus and tummy troubles I have.
Been on it over a month now and am finding it seems to lower my joint pain
and my fatigue.  I have more energy.  Now the rheumy reminded me of the
nasty side effects of this drug but the pros for me are outweighing that.
so with good follow up, blood tests and office visits, I decided ok let's
do this.

I do get sick when taking the shots but the effects are much better lately.
I get dizzy and nauseated just feel wiped out, but with in 24 hours that is
gone and I never knew I took it.

She needs to ask her doc all the side effects and HOW he or she intends to
monitor her when she is on this drug.

Good luck and keep us informed

Thanks...She is seriously considering taking it.  I'll let you know how she
does with it if she goes ahead with it.

I loved methotrexate. It was good alternative to plaquenil for a bit. I hope
your sis in law is going to be okay.
