Hello. I was diagnosed in 1997 with mixed connective tissue disease. I
have been doing pretty good with all the meds, (just can't seem to get off
prednisone). I have only really had issues with vasculitis. All of a
sudden I have the butterfly rash on my cheeks. Is this normal after so long
a time. Never had it before. The place where I work was just renovated and
we now have all new lights. Does anyone know if this could be the problem?
Thanks,
Diane
Hi Diane,
There are a number of us who have problems with store lighting. I don't get
a rash from it, but often feel ill if I stay too long. I met a woman when I
was going to the hospital for IV pred. She told me that she was sick for
years, but could not get a diagnosis. All her blood work kept coming back
normal. She began having kidney problems that baffled the doctors. One day
she developed the butterfly rash. The doctor took one look at it and, bingo,
she had a diagnosis of SLE. So I guess it can sometimes show up long after
illness begins. I understand that only about 30% of SLE patients get the
rash.

as usual, BJ is right - manifestations can change over time and from various
causes
that is why they call it a disease with a thousand faces - but the rash
finally made one doc sit up and take notice
