Newsgroup abbreviations for newbies and Plaquenil question

Hi Everyone

Firstly, I look into this newsgroup occasionally and appreciate everyones
stories:  I wonder though if some nice person could post a list .. along the
lines of  FAQ... of the acronyms that are used by the regulars here.  I can
work out some of them but others baffle me completely.

I am in Australia - and that makes a difference too :-)  but would really
appreciate some enlightenment.

Secondly, my sister has just had a visit to a dermatologist to investigate
her "allergy to the sun".  He has suggested Plaquenil - although he hasn't
tested for lupus - and was wondering if anyone here taking it could tell me
a little about this drug:  the side effects, the dose they are on / for how
long etc and whether the effects are immediate and settle down, or get worse
over time.

Thank you.

Winny

You post the letters, and others will suggest what they mean!

FAQ is both "frequently asked questions" and "frequently answered
questions"!

"If so, this is the answer."

Hi Winny.

The FAQ includes a list of most of the medical abbreviations and
initializations we use here.

Specifically:
http://www.ghg.net/schwerpt/ASLFAQ/glossary.htm

Of course there's a list of "usenet" abbreviations as well - i believe J or
someone has posted it before so it might well appear soon when she sees your
post.

I've been on Plaquenil for several years now.  I don't believe it has had
any positive effect on my photosensitivity.  I has seemed to have a
significant effect on my disease in general and when I miss it for more than
a few days I get into serious trouble with joint pain.  I had no side
effects other than it must be taken with food.  Not a lot, but at least a
small snack. Otherwise it makes me very nauseated.  I noticed benefits by 3
weeks.  That's a bit unusual and it was only that my daily headaches went
away.  After several months, I sort of "woke up" one day and realized that I
was limping all the time and that I didn't feel like death warmed over when
I got up in the morning.  And after several years now, sometimes it's almost
like I don't have this stupid disease.  Granted, I do take it very easy, I
do not get UV exposure which was doing the most damage to me, and I've had a
pretty cushy life since being able to quit work.  But I started the
Plaquenil some time after I quit (two years?) so I have to attribute a good
deal of my improvement to the drug.  That said - it isn't for everyone and
not everyone has the same great results I have had.  I think since I have
relatively mild disease, it makes a greater difference for me than it would
for someone who has more severe disease.
