Can anyone point me at a detailed but understandable explanation of why
folic acid is "good for you"?.
A friend has both Lupus and Rheumatoid arthritis. She is dose-juggling
folic acid supplements (which her body dislikes) with methotrexate
(which apparently eats folic acid). Her doctor is saying she does need
folic acid, but between him and her she is failing to understand the
reasons why!

Wow! If you'd replied any quicker it would have been before I'd asked!
Thanks :)

I'm on folic acid in case I accidentally get pregnant while on all these
meds -- prevents neural-tube defects. I know there are other reasons it is
good -- but this was the initial prompting that put me on it.

Methotrexate interferes with folic acid activity in the body thus supplementing
is mostly recommended w/ metho Rx.

Along with vitamins B6 and B12, Folate helps lower the amino acid intermediary,
homocysteine. High levels of homocysteine have been linked to heart disease.
