Beverley - 20 Sep 2004 04:08 GMT Well, I broke down today and decided I really needed a pair of jeans. Mine are just too loose! I went to Walmart and bought one pair. I need more than just jeans - everything is too big on me. This is going to get expensive - can see that coming and quickly.
My BP is still not down as far as it should be but I go to the doc this Thursday so maybe he'll up the med or something. I've been so good about my diet and virtually no salt. Sometimes I get frustrated because some things need a little salt to taste good. A few times I wanted salt so badly I could have just tipped the salt shaker into my mouth. I decided that my salt intake was way too low so I increased it a wee bit.
I did find some lettuce seeds the other day so I will plant them hopefully tomorrow. That will assure me a late crop of lettuce if I can protect it from the cold. I've become such a rabbit!! Wait until my husband sees the straw bale cold frame I am about to build. LOL
I dragged my lunch to work with me the other day and they kids all wanted my lunch! Lunch for me is a slightly modified chef's salad. Lots of lettuce, some tomato, cucumber if I have it, a hard boiled egg, maybe a slice of ham (280 mg salt) and a sprinkle of cheese worth another 100 mgs. I do like my salads but I miss putting things like black olives on it.
Does anyone know if I can eat pork if I have hypertension? Or is that an old wives tale? Dinner is usually a little beef or chicken and more salad.
I've also had some nasty headaches lately. Don't know why. I've taken aspirin and that helps. I thought BP meds should help to keep headaches away.
I've got to talk to the doctor about my joints they hurt especially in the morning when I first get up. My husband can hear them clicking across the room when I walk! I've always had bad knees but this is unreal!!
Why am I light-headed? Is that still coming from the BP meds? It's not all the time just once in a while.
Just whining tonight. Bev

Light headed feelings can be related to many things, not just bp... best get that checked by your doc.... and wow, you should be very proud of yourself girl! Having to buy 'smaller sized' clothes IMO is a real 'feat' and with all your dietary changes you will probably maintain easily as well so enjoy your shopping cause more than likely you will be wearing the new stuff a good long time! Good going, you rock girl! Whine all you like.. we are all here for that reason at different times ... so while I am here I will pass you the cheese while having some myself! As a canuck I am known as a 'cheesehead' and for good reason; I love it LOL! Hugs from BC ~Shelagh~
Beverley - 21 Sep 2004 00:24 GMT You can't pass me the cheese - too high in sodium!! Actually I do a wee bit of cheese about 1/2 an ounce with my chef's salad. I miss the cheeses and the other dairy products. I love yogurt but it's too high in salt, sugar and other carbohydrates. But the cheese is a real problem and like you it was a mainstay of my diet before all this no salt stuff! Sometimes I just want something so I have a bite. Not ten bites! LOL
I don't think anything I'm buying now will fit me in another few months. I probably have another 40 pounds to lose before I need to worry about being too thin. LOL But the weight is coming off slowly. Maybe I should invest in suspenders? LOL Bev

Beverley - 21 Sep 2004 00:55 GMT Hmmmm, virtual cheese to go with my pine bark and leaf diet? LOL Bev

Beverley - 22 Sep 2004 01:45 GMT So what do you use for weighing a person? It used to be stone. Bev

Depends who is doing the weighing and how old they are. The medical profession now takes the measurements in kilograms and converts it back to stones and pounds for the more mature patient so they know what it is!

Deb - 20 Sep 2004 09:57 GMT Bev, just a thought, are you getting enough vitamin c, plus you need to make sure your drinking enough water; you may be getting dehydrated which could explain the headaches. My husband gets dizzy spells with his bp meds sometimes, but has never really suffered from headaches. hope this helps, debi xx

I need more than [quoted text clipped - 35 lines] > Just whining tonight. > Bev Beverley - 21 Sep 2004 00:38 GMT I drink something constantly, water, ice tea, coffee, something is always nearby in the form of liquid! I've always been a juice drinker and now that is gone. So I bought a package of little orange juice cartons. I can open a little carton and pour just a sip. Then I don't open a big carton and have it sit and lose the vit C. Usually my husband will drink the little container after I've opened it. I tend to follow cravings as I think our body craves what it needs. My desire for fruit went way up so if I have an ounce or two once in a while that's okay. This summer I was drinking more iced tea with lemon in it but as it has cooled down I'm not drinking as much iced tea so not as much lemon. Guess I should just take some Vit C tablets but it's much more fun to drink it! Bev

Beverley - 21 Sep 2004 00:47 GMT The lettuce I got was Simpson and it doesn't form a head so I can just keep picking the outer leaves. But I'll probably plant about 1/2 of it and then plant the other half more towards Feb unless I happen to lose what I have to the cold. I also bought some spinach so I can mix some baby spinach leaves into my salad. I haven't found any other "lettuce" seeds locally.
Unfortunately I didn't get them in the ground today, maybe tomorrow.
This bunny rabbit needs her fresh supply of lettuce and tomatoes!! Tomatoes will be a bigger problem as the season wears on. I might try to put a tomato cutting into my cold frame. Bev

Don't know why. I've taken > aspirin and that helps. I thought BP meds should help to keep headaches > away. Most BP meds will cause terrible headaches at first. I have very low BP (80/40 on a good day; lower on bad ones) but take Cozaar for the kidney-protecting side-effects; for the first month after starting it I thought I'd die of the headaches but they did go away.
Low BP/very low BP is the cause of headaches as well, though they tend to be of the low-level nagging sort, not the powerful mind-blowers of ACEI/ARB therapy. Be careful when standing up; do it slowly. Even though your BP is likely in the normal/high normal range, it's probably low *for you* and until you adjust, rising abruptly can cause headaches, dizziness and near-fainting.

janers - 20 Sep 2004 15:44 GMT Hi Bev, well girl you are doing "fab" and sticking to it. That is wonderful and you should be so very proud of yourself too.
About the headaches, like they all mentioned it could be due to many things and needs to be told to the doctor. BUT it also might mean you are "missing" something in your diet too. I suggest after you tell the doctor, to call someone like a dietician at a clinic or hospital and mention the low salt diet and ask for some advice. Now they may say, you need an order for them to do that, but I doubt it very much. It is all a matter of change of habit in your intake and what you are missing.
I do know sometimes that the meds will do that but you have been on the bp med for long enough to have them headaches dimish by now. I for the life of me can not remember the drug? If you look it up on www.rxlist.com see if it is a nitrate type drug or side effects such as headaches. And remember our talk on the phone, your bp will go up with LOTS of stuff but the average is the one you look at. Plus since weight loss it might get even better for you. Lake of salt sometimes works to our disadvantage too, so watch out about that. Has something to do with potassium too and PLEASE do not take potassium unless ORDERED by a doctor. Some feel it is good for you but it is VERY Hard on heart and kidneys as well. Over the counter is NOT a good thing unless supervised by the doc and ordered.
please keep in touch hugs janers WAY TO GO BEV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Beverley - 21 Sep 2004 00:12 GMT BP is still running a wee bit high. It seems to average about 115/90 but sometimes the bottom number hits the 100 mark.
I use Morton light salt (sodium/potassium mix) and have for years. Most people get too much sodium and not enough potassium. The need to combine the two in our diet has been known for years but people still use straight sodium. I can't remember what the ratio should be but if you have too much sodium and not enough potassium you can have big problems. Of course now I'm hardly using anything. I'm a little concerned about the lack of iodine being I don't eat any seafood. Goiters run rampant through our family.
I've got a great dietician at the health dept.. she's free ($$$) and very nice!!
I'm taking Norvasc 5 mg before I go to bed each night. (It does not contain any diuretic.) Bev
> Hi Bev, > well girl you are doing "fab" and sticking to it. That is wonderful and [quoted text clipped - 26 lines] > janers > WAY TO GO BEV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! janers - 21 Sep 2004 04:47 GMT Bev the most common side effect of Norvasc is HEADACHE. I think you need to either get that drug changed to something else, especially if the diastolic is running that high. It is not doing the job then cause the diastolic should be at least below 75 they say now.
more side effects of that drug
Cardiovascular: Arrhythmia (including ventricular tachycardia and atrial fibrillation), bradycardia, chest pain, hypotension, peripheral ischemia, syncope, tachycardia, postural dizziness, postural hypotension.
so you might be experiencing lows that are causeing that and IT IS NOT stabalizing, so call that doc.
Please get it checked out before you pass out for sure. hugs janers
herbwormwood - 24 Sep 2004 21:42 GMT Hi, Glad to hear the diet is going well. I also have a low salt diet, but since my kidney health is now okay I use a little Lo-Salt and also herb salt in cooking. I eat no processed foods whatsoever. Processed foods contain a lot of sodium. Ready meals, tinned food, packet food. Very unhealthy stuff. The Lo Salt contains potassium. You can also obtain potassium in bananas. If you have a big change in your diet and feel faint, is there any chance you could be anemic? Anemia can cause faint feelings. I get anemic as part of my condition but it can be diet related too. Not enough iron and not enough of certain minerals can cause it.

I've wondered about my glasses but if that was it - well, then it should be a constant headache.
Oh, yeah, I don't do anything fast or I get real dizzy. Especially if I lean over to do something. Whoa!!! I've been on this med since June 3 - I think by now I should be acclimated to it. Bev

Nicole H - 21 Sep 2004 04:41 GMT sodium induced hypertension depends on the person. salt may or not affect you at all. i'm fortunate that i have really low blood pressure 107/57 saturday.... so i salt away. hypertension runs in my family wtg on the weight loss nicole
Beverley - 22 Sep 2004 04:04 GMT I've watched what I've eaten and I can't say to makes a whole bunch of difference. If I've eaten something high in salt it might show up 24 hours later in my BP or right away then again it might not show up at all. I can't figure it out. Bev
> sodium induced hypertension depends on the person. salt may or not affect > you at all. [quoted text clipped - 3 lines] > wtg on the weight loss > nicole Beverley - 22 Sep 2004 04:30 GMT UH, OH! Doc appt is this coming Monday not Thursday! Darn it!
I had on a pair of pants today that used to be tighter on me. They were my "slimmer" pants last winter, brown cords, very comfortable. There is elastic in the waist so they stay up but they are hanging on me! I won't even bother trying on my other cords.
Of course today started out cool and wound up hot. So by 3 PM I was dying of heat! I should have put the tee shirt on under the sweatshirt but that would have been too much this morning. Virginia weather!!!
This is a lousy way to lose weight. But thanks for all the encouragement and well wishes guys!! It's slow but maybe by next year this time I'll be slim. Bev
BJ - 23 Sep 2004 00:10 GMT Hi Bev, I can't help you with your questions. The only thing I know is that pork is okay, ham isn't. I just wanted to tell you that I think you are doing an amazing job with your weight loss. Good for you. BJ-Sk. Canada
> Well, I broke down today and decided I really needed a pair of jeans. Mine > are just too loose! I went to Walmart and bought one pair. I need more than [quoted text clipped - 35 lines] > Just whining tonight. > Bev Beverley - 23 Sep 2004 03:47 GMT Actually, I do eat a little ham. I buy the low salt deli (sandwich) ham. And as long as I don't have but 1 or 2 thin (shaved) slices on my salad I'm OK. That's less than an ounce so that is not much at all. I think I've driven the folks behind the counter at the deli nuts asking them to read the sodium content of all the different lunch meats. It's amazing how much they vary from brand to brand!! I can buy a half pound (8 ounces) of low salt ham and get 3 sandwiches for the granddaughter out of it plus what I use on my salads. She get a whole lot more on her sandwiches. So I'm sure I'm well under an ounce per day. But I have not had a regular ham, as in a dinner ham. Which I miss, and always loved. And I've not had any pork. I know pork used to be a big no-no but I have no idea why.
This is a crappy way to lose weight. I just hope maybe you are gaining a few of the pounds I've lost! I'd like to send you a few more of mine.
I do really miss certain things but like I said before if I really want something I'll have a taste. I've taken a nip off a cookie and then gave the cookie my granddaughter. I've had a bite of cake - enough to taste it. But I don't do that all the time. Sometimes when I do that I decide something is way too sweet! But I tried it so I don't feel deprived.
Sometimes I get really hungry!! But I was never a junk food junkie. I love my breads, pastas and potatoes. I miss some of that. I will admit I've always been a cookie monster especially when it comes to homemade cookies. I don't want to think about things like cheesecake! LOL
No, the hardest thing is getting the salt out of the diet. Everything has salt in it!! Anything pre-made is soaked in salt. Meals out are almost impossible due to the amount of salt. I really have been very careful about the salt. What makes this so hard is knowing I'll never be able to go back to eating like a normal person. This is a forced life-style change. There is no cheating. If I have a taste of something then it has to count towards the whole day's intake.
Maybe I'll write a book on 1000 Salad Dressing Recipes that are low in salt, etc. LOL Bev
