just a quick question,
has anyone experienced weight gain for no specific reason, my steroids
stopped about three weeks ago and i dont seem to be able to shed any of my
gained weight despite sticking to a rigid eating plan, i'm getting really
fed up now as i managed to lose 2 1/2 stone last year, 1 stone of which is
now back on,

Debi,
I am 53 yrs old, 5'3" tall and weighed 105 lbs from high school to just a
few years ago.  Nothing I did to gain some weight ever worked...a few pounds
more was all I wanted.  Well I swear I went to bed one night weighing 105
and woke up weighing 140.  The weight gain was not after taking pred or
anyother meds and I have managed to shed only 10 lbs of it.  Would like to
shed at least 10 more but it just won't go away!!!!!!!!

Not what you wanted to hear but you aren't alone with the weight gain.

Hugs,
sherry

Welcome to ASL Debi!

If I remember correctly, the prednisone actually changes a person's
metabolism & this is why it is so difficult to lose those steroid
pounds.  If I'm wrong, someone please correct me on this.

Nonetheless, hun, it changes something & Sherry is correct, you're not
alone.  Most here have been through it at one time or another & if they
haven't, it's only because they have usually had trouble *gaining*
weight.

I just decided to eat what I'm suppose to & keep active the best my body
allows me to & not dwell on it.  The fact is, so many "healthy" people
are eating so badly, that they're less healthy than I.  However, I love
my Coke & just did the switch from regular coke to diet coke, so things
could happen with that???  Especially since I'm drinking a lot more
water as the diet coke is so beyond horrible. LOL!

I hope you'll stick around, Deb.  Nobody here cares if you have some
extra weight. We'd like ya even if you grow a tail from the pred.. :-)

Maggie

thanks for all your replies, i'm pleased that others have been in the same
situation, i'll stick with it for now. By the way there's no sign of a tail
yet, but i'll let you know!?!

As maggie pointed out, it's important to recognize that steroids have very
long-term effects.  give yourself time to adjust to being without before
worrying about the weight changes or lack thereof.  I have to ask - what
sort of exercise are you able to do?  There is a secret to weight loss - two
secrets actually...

diet and exercise. :P

If you are exercising - does it include weight-bearing exercise?  During the
80s and 90s all the health clubs stressed "aerobic" exercise.  This is
important but it is not the sole key in weight loss.  The process of
strengthening muscles and keeping them strong is also critical to weight
loss as muscles require fuel more so than other tissues.  This is part of
why practicing yoga is an excellent way to lose weight - many of those poses
are weight-bearing and strengthen both bone and muscle greatly.  Have ya
ever seen a fat yogi?

If you have limited exercise capability at this time - yoga or water
exercise are great ways to work out without putting as much strain on our
already achin' bodies.

I'm a bit confused - you lost weight last year - was that before starting
steroids?  Did the weight come back on when you started the steroids (which
of course would be the cause of the weight gain if so.)

And it doesn't help that steroids damage muscle tissue directly, all the
more reason to find gentle ways to strengthen your muscles.  Just do so with
your doc's approval first.  I practice yoga and have started some beginners
Pilates - but I've never been on steroids and I was underweight until
recently.  I started yoga with a tape called "Bed Top Yoga" which was an
excellent way to start for someone who had a great deal of muscle/joint
pain.

just some thoughts...

I don't think there is such a thing as weight gain for no reason - but I
suspect you mean for no reason such as eating fast food daily and in large
quantity.  Something has changed for you physiologically and if it isn't the
steroid use than I would recommend talking to your doc about what might have
caused it.  I would imagine you will need some time for your adrenal glands
to adjust to no steroids again before you will see any weight loss.

i do yoga already on a daily basis (joints allowing), it helps me relax,
especially if i've had a particularly horrific shift at work which seems to
be a daily occurance (very busy and as usual short staffed).
The weight i lost last year was before diagnosis, i was working full time
then, and was a member of a slimming clinic - i felt brilliant, down 2
clothes sizes and seemed to have oodles of energy (appetite suppressants -
unable to take anymore as my skin gets worse; ? condition or medication
reaction, i don't know). I was hoping to lose some weight before our hols in
july (1st in 4 years), just to avoid looking like a beached whale. The kids
and Rob (my better half), really aren't bothered about my extra pounds,
they're just looking forward to some time away, it's just me thats fed up.
I'm seeing the consultant again next week, see what she thinks ( it's quite
handy being a nurse, i feel i can talk candidly about just about anything,
and i've been seeing her on and off for the past 7 years with skin problems;
i think there may be a little guilt on her behalf that Lupus wasn't
considered earlier!)
thanks for your input,
Debi

Hi Debi
Interesting... I was on Fen/Phen when I got my malar rash.
Actually she'd asked me not to use the Phen (if I could) so I used it sparingly.

I used them for about 2 or 3 months, then I stopped.
I think they partly helped me get over the hump (of stomach shrinking) while I
increased my walking program (exercise of some form or another).

They're mentioned here (under fenfluramine and phentermine - one's called
Ionamin and the other Ponderal or Ponderil)  http://www.uklupus.co.uk/bn17.html
This is a pretty good article of thngs to avoid
I think I should look those two meds up.

It's unfortunate nobody thought of Lupus for you for so many years. Hopefully
it's a learning experience for them and you'll feel better soon.

PS I'm not advocating these meds, in fact, I think there was trouble with the
combo.. was just telling my stuff about it..

Try not to worry about your weight, Debi. Those pred pounds will come off in
time. I think your body has to reset.
