Well folks!!! I am NOW off the imuran. I had to cut down another bp med
this week, then restart at the very low dose of imuran.
I started the weakness and bingo, vomiting. Even zofran didn't get to it.
I have never had such abdominal cramping in my life. I felt like my body
was a leaving me one time. Whoa, not a nice feeling.
So here we go again. Anyone have any ideas on what to use to control this
LUPUS> I flunked plaquenil, severe allergy.
flunked imuran, can not take MTX due to past liver enzymes being up and
history of liver problems when younger.
Am on medrol..
What else is there. RHeumy said NO to cell cept, it is worse than imuran
for side effects.
Need something to keep me a going here. What is the name of drug that has
DHEA in it? mind ain't a working
thanks

What about Cytoxan, Janers? That is the only other thing I can come up with.

So sorry to learn this Janers. I found these. It's definitely not a
complete list, but there's some on here that may be useful for you. I
hope you find something. There's gotta be something just for you.
Cytoxan--The one BJ suggested:

MY sympathies to you. I liked the term"flunked"! I flunked Imuran
too,plus most antibiotics,anti-imflammatories etc...though I am
counting my blessings as I have been on Plaquenil for 16 years now and
the worst days were the early ones ,as now it doesn't bother me. I
take it when i go to sleep. I just had an eye check and I think the
eye doc who is doing a study on it was dissappointed that it
hasn'tected my eyes yet .Each year she tells me it will be my last,
then the specialist favours Methotrexate, there goes my little tipple
of white wine before dinner then.Imuran made me just about turn inside
out with vomiting plus my liver enzymes went wonky the first week. I
hope you find another drug . Plaquenil is getting less effective for
me as I came out wih my 2nd discoid patch today. I didn't feel the
first one but this one I could feel coming. Sitting out in the sun
early winter here at my Mothers 89th birthday probably did it.Ah well,
I'm off to geyserland and the lakes to our caravan with the hubby and
doglet for the weekend. I shall view the scenery through the windows
and away from the sun!!
Sooze off to Rotovegas in New Zealand (Rotorua that is...)

janers, well &#*%! It gets pretty scary when your options are so
limited. I keep hoping that my doctor will find a reason to take me
off Imuran, but I guess I should be thankful that it works for me
without side effects. I don't have any ideas, but I'm sending you
good thoughts and a warm cup of tea (my mom's solution to everything
when I was a kid).

There is a drug called Purinethol (6-Mercaptopurine or 6-MP), which Imuran
is a derivative of. It's mainly used in Crohn's (inflammatory bowel
disease). You might be able to tolerate it despite that you didn't tolerate
Imuran well. My sister had serious cardiac side effects from Imuran, but
hasn't had any problems with 6-MP.

Hi Janers
I take a combination of Prednisolone, Cyclosporin and Cellcept. (This is
for transplant as well though.) I have no problem.
I have been taking Cellcept for mmmmm... about 5 years and after the initial
mild symptoms of ..., err.... change in bowel habits, all is rosy! Before
this I took Imuran for about 15 years with no symptoms at all. I have never
had MTX or plaquenil. But did have a three month go at monthly IV Cytoxan.
Not pretty.
Good luck with finding something. Are you taking Pred.?

I am on medrol. I do not have kidney involvement so the doc is saying she
doesn't want to use cytoxin and keep that in, just in case somethind does
go wrong.
Cell cept she is telling me has Horrific side effects and worse than the
imuran for me. Maybe she is thinking of my GI track. I have a history of
problems ranging from Achalasia then opened to GERD and bowel problems of
diverticulosis to diverticulitis. But that last part has shifted to NO
Bowel movements alot LOL. So cell cept at least would make me "go".
I have been on medrol for 11 yrs now that is why she is telling me we have
to use something else cause medrol is NOT bringing sed rate down and
helping me any more. Plus my back is degenerating more and more with pain.
NOT a nice feeling sometimes.
Do you have kidney involement? Is that why the combo for you?
thanks

<<Plus my back is degenerating more and more with pain. NOT a nice feeling
sometimes.>>
So far as the back degeneration goes, there is a procedure that might help you
with this. It was developed by radiologists, though it's now performed by some
other physicians as well. The name of the procedure is vertebroplasty.
http://www.emedicine.com/radio/topic871.htm This procedure is used when spinal
degeneration causes compression fractures, a common cause of severe back pain
with spinal osteoporosis. With vertebroplasty, a compound is injected into the
area of the compression fracture. When it solidifies, it usually immediately
relieves the pain. When my husband was a neuroradiology fellow, they were
doing this procedure left and right on people with osteoporosis.

My neighbor had the vertebroplasty done today. I couldn't get ahold of
her to find out how she is, but they expected her to recover quickly.
Also, I read a piece in this Sunday's paper about a new procedure for
compression fractures, in which they use a tiny balloon. More info
