Does anyone here use a wheeled walker with a seat?  My doctor has prescribed
one for me and I am trying to find out what would be best.  Never having
used one, I do not know what features are really the best to have.  For one
thing, I am the shortest kid on the block, and so I need a model for very
small people.  How important is the height of that seat, etc.  Are hand
brakes a good thing, etc.

Somebody give me the goods on walkers, if you can.

Thanks

Mair

Here y'go Mair.  Some kewl lookin' equipment too!  I'm sure the
seats/walkers are adjustable & Pigmet could ride comfortably in the
handy basket. : )

This company doesn't have a website listed, but they have a 1-800# & the
name of the page suggests that they may work closely with MediCal &
would know how to get this approved ASAP  The one I copied to this post
is in Simi Valley.  Don't know how close that is, but they would deal
with MediCal being in CA.

Or maybe a little side car, like the ones you see on motorcycles.

I need also to get 'Met a sun protective shirt, so that his fur won't fade.
Sunscreen lotions are terrible on furry critters :-)

Hey there Mair

got your private email, thanks for thinking of me, going "over" that bridge
haha.

The walker with wheels is a good thing.  NOW if you get a prescription for
it from the doctor giving a diagnosis why you have to have it, well go to
or phone contact a Medical supply house nearest you.  OR the hospital can
get you to the right place too.
But the wheel one is  one like my MIL had and she loved it since all the
floors in the home were NOT carpet.  IF you have carpet, that will be a
little more tricky.  Cause the wheels drag big time.
There is a walker that has wheels and when you hold on and push down the
thing moves for you, and it is handy too.  Plus there is all kinds but I
really think a medical person or therapist should see you, and figure out
what you need here.  Just don't go buy one and then be sorry it is the
wrong kind.

Now again, medicare should take care of it, so please also check into that
and save yourself some MOOLA.  They are not cheap.  If you need like toliet
extensions to help you they take care of that too.  Is it due to painful
knees or what is going on, I am out of sync here LOL

Call someone who knows these things, and get a prescription and off ya go.
OH and make sure the bugger folds up nicely to fit into a car.  sometimes
they try and gyp ya and give you the old kind.  All walkers are adjustable
to height of the patient now.  That is a must also.

let me know ok?

Regarding my getting the walker:  the chances don't look so good that
Medi-CAL will pay for it.  That is what the lady at the equipment store
said.   I need a cart that will carry my *stuff,* so that I don't always
have a purse or heavy bag hanging over my shoulders.  And I need a seat, so
that when I find a good patch of shade, there will always be a bench there!
Me and Met could then go out for a walk around the lake, and not worry about
collapsing somewhere along the way.

I have not given up on trying to get it authorized, however--as far as I am
concerned, I need to hear an official "NO!" because I have been allowed to
have medicines that are not in the formulary, etc... and we will just see
what the Universe has in store for me.

If they
don't approve it, well then, I am just gonna havta find one on my own.  The
internet has great deals.  I looked for these walkers on Ebay, and there
they are, basically a copy of the Nova walker that I want, with one
problem... they all seem to be the normal size:  I need a short one, with a
seat 18 or 19 inches off the ground, and handles that adjust down to about
27 inches.  I am going to give my doctor's office a few days to try to
fenegle an authorization, and then I am going to go searching.  I am going
to go find a store where I can try them out, and that will help me decide.
There are not too many options down in the shorty range. Two models that I
have seen so far.  Pigmet kinda had his heart set on a red one.  But I sat
down with him and had a little talk.

I told him that red is the only color that many animals can see.

"Wow" he said, "I'm just so lucky that I can see so many colors!"
"Yeah, Met, you are lucky.  But what if we were out nature hiking, and the
animals saw the red on our cart?"
"They might come to visit us, cause they could tell we were there!" he said.
"Doncha think it might scare them away?" I said,  "I mean--if they didn't
know it was us?"
He said, "I will make sure to go out in front of us and yell: 'it's US!  it
is us, us, US, so don't be afraid anyone,' okay?"
I laughed.
"Met?" I said.  "The green or the black is what we are going to get, if we
have a choice, okay?"
"Ohwh-khaaay," he said. But once he gets used to the idea, he will be
excited
about hiding amongst the trees to see rare birds on the way to his treasure
site."  That's how Met is.

Our Best Wishes to All of you,
From Mair and Pigmet
