HI guys:

I am back in Calgary; my sister's wedding was lovely. It was a big
triumph to make it there....I'm sad to  have left my family; they were
so caring and kind to me. I missed my little son though...

I am struggling with my lungs, fluid, coughing.... my cancer doctor
says: "Your lungs are going downhill and we don't know why." I've seen
the lung doctor.. done tests... I'm on prednisone to try and reduce the
inflammation. Apparently, it doesn't look like cancer, lupus or chemo
toxicity. I don't have TB.

I stay on the steroids for two weeks, then a bunch of tests again....
see the doctor again....

I am 98 pounds.

I have an MRI to check on the brain tumors Tuesday, but I won't get
results til a week Thursday.

Thanks for your support,

Grace.

p.s. My family bought me a very nice wig!

Nice to here you had a great time at your sisters wedding .You have earned
some smile time.
Not happy to here of fluid build up. Can you sleep with head 45 degree to
aid breathing ?

Hi Grace,
I am sure you are exhausted, but thrilled, from having made it to your
sister's wedding. I wasn't sure when you would be up to posting after the
trip and excitement. I think of you, your struggles and courage every day. I
hope the results of your MRI will be very good and that they can get a
handle on your lung problem quickly.
Hugs to you.

Welcom back Grace, I'm sorry to hear about your lungs.
Were you somewhere damp/humid? Something hit my lungs yesterday morning.
Coincidentally it turned rainy and cool the same day, but I did have
something like you describe 6? years ago.  A walkin clinic told me it might
be "walking pneumonia".  It was some months after I had a different
infection and had been on antibiotics. The fluids just poured out of my
mouth for over a month.  Then my feet and lower legs went black and blue. a
doctor later told me that was a sign of "blood poisoning"/infection. It
went away eventually.
I wonder if you have bronchial pneumonia? (since you're coughing too).

I hope you feel better soon.  Will you tell us about this lovely wig that
your family gave you?
I'd loved to hear your description.

Hi J:

Ontario is damper than here; but I've been struggling with this for a couple
months....

Nothing shows up on my chest xray, but it looks like some unknown infection on
the CT scan.

The wig is "hazel" color -- brownish; straight, with a bit of a bang, slightly
curling just under the chin -- newscaster hair! I've got a lot of
compliments....I think I'll be delaying going to my GI Jane look....the hair is
definitely coming in though. It seems like a 'plus' in the health column....

Hi Grace, "newscaster hair" that's a first for me.
The wig sounds lovely the way you describe it.

Thanks for explaining Grace, sounds like it won't be long before your own hair is
back.
I've heard that the hair (sometimes) comes in darker.
Just think about that, maybe no gray hairs?
Although gray can give a "seasoned look".... (I'll ask Andy)

Goodness me, I just thought about this, with your eye surgery and the wig, it's
like there's a whole new you.
The Grace Makeover. Maybe there's money in that?
While I'm here Grace, are you planning to go to that event on the West Coast where
you've been nominated for your book? That would be kewl, especially if somebody
would take pictures. Then we could look at one on the photo website and feel like
we were there with you.  Wish we all could be there because we are so proud of you.

Hugs

Where and when on the West Coast is this "event" for Grace's book? Anyone
know?

Michael
Grace Casselman - 04 May 2004 01:37 GMT
On that's overstating it!

The winner will be honored in Victoria at the end of June, but everyone
would
know the winner by then...
I'd only go if someone suggested paying; haven't got an invite so
far....I'd
need my lungs working better....

How much is needed Grace? I'm not rich, but I could contribute, if others would
also..depending..
Hugs (email me if you prefer)

Oh, it's really not that...it's just that I'd want to be invited specifically by
the organizers. Maybe they just invite, etc., the actual winner...?

Honestly, breathing is my priority right now. :)

In other news, Big Brothers, Big Sisters (I am one) put out a press release on the
shortlisting today...

You're a big sister? Kewl, the girl must be honoured and that's such a great thing to
do, Grace.
Young people need people to look up to.

Maybe nobody goes and it's done in private, I don't know (and they advise the winners
after their "Conference".
I don't know who they invite, but I've made inquiries.
Maybe we'll get you an invite ASAP.

So your breathing gets better soon.
Hugs Grace.

Hi J and Grace,
My hair grew back darker. I didn't have a lot of grey anyway, but now my
hair is quite dark. I actually liked the grey. It softened my face and
looked rather pretty. Oh well. No hair colouring needed here. I have to say
that seeing my hair grow back really lifted my spirits. It made me feel that
I was returning to good health. I now have "newscaster hair" too, but it
isn't a wig. <g>

I'm so glad you had a good time with your family. Weddings are always fun!

But this lung thing is a little scary. Can you see a pulmonologist?

You might be a petite thing but 98 pounds is getting very low even for a
petite adult.
Sending warm gentle ((((HUGS)))) your way

I saw one! He says it looks like asthma with an infection on top of it...but
it's not really going away....I'm on steroids for that. I see him again at the
end of the month, but my cancer doctor consults with him...

I was 155+, 5'5" before the lupus! 128 before the cancer!

Billie - 03 May 2004 06:57 GMT
Hi Grace.  I've just been reading off and on here for a few weeks or so, and
am putting together my *intro* but wanted to take the time to talk to you.
I am 62 (in August), and have multiple autoimmune diseases at least since I
was 22 with the birth of my first baby, but it is questionable about some of
my heart and urinary problems that *seemed* to come from my bout of
rheumatic fever at age eight.

I have had problems with asthma, bronchitis, and pneumonia for10+ years,
which required steroids, antibiotics, and breathing machine treatments four
times a day, along with the ever-present inhaler in my purse at all times.
Cancer/chemo is one thing I have never had..... at least as of right now,
any way.  With all the diseases, though, who knows what is next!  LOL

It was during the steroid treatment of the asthma that we found the help it
gave with the autoimmune diseases.  Now, I cannot be without it.  We're
hoping to be able to restart the Methotrexate (my *miracle* drug), thereby
being able to go off or greatly reduce the Prednisone.  I'm on 20 mg a day
now, down from 40, but unable to go any lower.

I know all about having the *stuff* in the lungs, yet tests and x-rays not
being definitive.  Currently, I have a *wet rattle/sputum* that I cannot
attribute to any certain thing.  A couple of times, it had bright red
streaks of blood, but small, looking more like contact with irritation of
the membranes.  Sometimes I wheeze, sometimes I do not.  My asthma is
definitely worsened by exercise, so since I am bedridden, it is under good
control.  Stress **does** worsen mine noticeably.  I have learned throughout
the years with psychological therapy to *know my body* and its reaction to
*life* around me.

I, too, lost weight on Prednisone at first, until the Cushing's Syndrome
started taking form, and *transformed* my body into an indescribable,
deplorable shape.  That was hard for me to cope with emotionally.  When I
looked into the mirror, I did not recognize the image I saw at all.  It is
better, but I'm still overweight, after a lifetime of being tall and skinny.
Now, thanks to the osteoporosis, I have shrunk 1.5 inches, and had
difficulty standing straight.

Don't know that I can help any or not, but at least I've been there sans the
cancer.

Congratulations on the wig!!  With my thinning hair, I know how different
you must feel with it.  I am unable to take care of my daily needs, and my
hair is the pits.  We're going to see if I can get Home Health to come to
help me.

(((((HUGS)))))
