Which is more important, arterial oxygen saturation, or arterial
oxygen concentration? And, is this  factitious pt hypoxic, or not:

SaO2: 88%
PaO2: 64 mmHg
PaCO2: 35 mmHg
A-a gradient; 47 mmHg
Shunt fraction: 27%
SBE: -13.1 mmol/L
HCO3 13.5 mmol/L
Hb: 21.67 g/dL
CaO2: 25.75%

Does this patient need ventilation?

Thanks!

Is this homework?

This is a LAB list, not med school. Lab techs don't decide questions
about ventilation. The docs do that based on our lab results. We learn
basics about acid/base balance, but the actual decision making about
IV's, ventilation, etc. are made at the MD level.

http://web2.iadfw.net/uthman/ - Pathologist Ed Uthman has some good
discussions of Hematology - scroll down for some URL's about anemias,
etc.

Certainly seems that way.....

No, it isn't. I'd say no, she's oxygenating fine, b/c CaO2 is above
18%.

How about a transfusion.

Why could that be needed? Her CaO2 is fine; is there something I'm
missing?
