All in med.lab world...

I've been asked to pass along this question...

How many of you allow results of HIV and related testing to pass
electronically from your LIS into your HIS or EMRs?
If you do not allow those interfaced results, what is the current reason?

Thanks,
       Craig

We do not allow providers to order HIV tests directly since the VA has a
policy of providing counciling prior to having the test drawn, and it is
the councilor who gives the test results to the patient. We demand a
manual slip with a statement that the pre test counciling has been done.
We will then order the test in the computer and when the tests come back
they are entered into the computer just like all other lab tests. The VA
has a pretty solid access requirment for the Computerized Patient Record
System (CPRS) and our HIPPA compliance officer ensures compliance.
