I wrote a series of cont 'ed on pseudoreticulocytosis and interference with
our CD4000. Unfortunately I am not familiar with the technology you use.
Keep in mind that MB is not specific for reticulocytes. HB bodies, Heinz
bodies, basophilic stippling all stain with MB and are not retics.
We perform smear reviews for any auto retic greater than 8%. We look for red
cell inclusions on the above. It is also a good idea to check for
hyposplenism and Keratocytes (Blister cell, eccentrocytes, helmet cells,
bite cells, and irregularly contracted cells sometimes called spherocytes.
Those are associated with heinz body anemias. Heinz bodies are not seen with
wrights stain but do stain with MB and are seen with flow instruments with
laser.
Malarial parasites I don't know with your instrument? Vivax infects the
retics so no false increase there but it does with falciparum as it infects
both young and old cells.
Any smear not showing consistent polychromasia or increased red cell
inclusions are performed with a manual retic.

I'll have to see how I handle this check point.  I have found many times in
the passed that going to B/C for help is generally useless, as there never
seems to be much theoretical help ( field service excellent though).  The
question you touched on in your post was a concern of mind about two years
back and I just don't remember how I wrote the proceedure (lot of help from
the spell "chequer".)
