Abnormal Hemogram results

In August of 2003 I arrived at ER having psychotic delusions.  I have never
had anything like this in my history, other than periodic panic attacks. I
was doing things totally out of character for myself. If you had told me
the sky was purple, I would have believed you.  Was not able to think for
myself or dress myself. There seemed to be an endless chatter in my head.
Almost to the suicidal point. Could this have been a drug induction?
Hemogram MCV-75.8, MCH-24.0, RDW-14.4. Could drug induction have caused
these abnormalities. I'm thinking possibly GHB or Ecstasy, but have no way
of knowing for sure. Any help you could give me would be greatly
appreciated.

I have a suggestion for the cause of these results, but it doesn't really
address the symptoms you describe
You were mildly iron deficient  - what was the haemoglobin (Hb) ?

Over to you, Tom !

HGB was 12.0, which I don't think is abnormally low.  Thanks for your
response.

Not "abnormally" low, but not that high, either.
I think my initial thoughts are right.
Have you tried taking any iron suppliments ?
Rhonda White - 27 Jan 2005 13:47 GMT
Yes, at one time I did try the iron supplements, but they were hard on my
stomach.  I do try to eat foods containing iron.   Would iron deficiency
have caused the psychosis, do you think?

It's possible - there's certainly circumstantial evidence that iron
deficiency can affect one's mental state.

Indeed?  Can you actually link his apparent paranoid schizophrenia to his
diet?  I'd suspect the other causation to be more the case.

In the case of your latest correspondent, King George III might relate.

Why would you think the other to be the case?

>Why would you think the other to be the case?

There are many causes of delusional behavior and episodes such as you
mention.  Some of these are diagnosable by means of laboratory studies,
others are not.

You offer evidence of such behavior along with a presentation that suggests
chronic anemia.
Again, many causes.  George III suffered from a biochemical disorder that
caused delusional behavior and is associated partly with anemias.  This came
to mind, perhaps because of your national origin.

Rather than seeking answers on internet use groups, my professional opinion
is that you will be better served by taking your questions to a licensed
physician.  Good luck.  And under no circumstances should you view anything
offered by tommy hennessey, writing now as ironjustice@aol.com as valid.  He
has a long usenet history of demonstrating mania,  delusional behavior, and
hatred of women, Jews, and others.
