I have been having the discussion with my partner about having genital
herpes and sex, the topic came up about if he could perform oral sex on
me, and what the risks were. I realized that I did not have an answer as
there really seems to be no information about this subject. I am smart
enough to know that during an outbreak all sexual contact should be
stopped, but I would like to know if I'm not having an outbreak what is
the "rules" around oral sex.

Thanks,
Jenny

Hi Jenny,

The rules are whatever you and your partner decide they should be.

As to the risks, it depends on which type you have: type 1 or type 2.  Type 1
genital herpes will transfer to your partner's mouth far more easily than type 2
will.  Type 2 is not very common orally but it has been known to happen.

Has your partner ever had a cold sore?

No my partner has never had a cold sore. And it's type 2.

Thanks,
Jenny

Has your partner ever been tested properly for herpes simplex virus?

A great place to start would be to know what your herpes status is AND your
partner's status.

Do you have genital herpes type-1 or genital herpes type-2 ?

Has your boyfriend ever been tested for herpes?

Angela ;-)

He has never been tested for genital herpes, he has only had the regular
standard STD testing, nothing elaborate. I don't know if he is going to
last much longer, I'm currently going through an OB, and he is not being
overly supportive, he says that he is not freaking out, but I think that
he is. I know that I have to give him sometime to let it sink in, but he
has known since the dating discussions started. Who knows any advice on
that one.

Thanks,
Jenny

As you can see from -- www.yoshi2me.com -- herpes simplex virus is not
included in the routine std testing process. So it's pretty clear to me that
you guys are not aware of his status at this time.

I'm not sure that I understand what you mean? You told him that you have
herpes and he doesn't understand? Perhaps this will help you --
