Been with a gal for three months and knew she had herpes. She informed me
that she was starting to have an outbreak and showed me what it looked like
on her. We didn't have sex for a few days and she thought it gone. She takes
a presciption for outbreaks. I don't know what it is though. We got together
and I checked her area and no signs of redness or anything like herpes. We
had intercourse and as we progressed I started to get oral and looked at her
down there and saw a red sore but not an open one and it looked like the
intercouse irrateded it some. it wasn't there before intercourse.

We used a antiseptic in my mouth and I washed with soap and water hoping to
prevent infection in me.

My question do I now have herpes and when do i go for a test?

Thanks,
AR

Hi AR,

I'm ar.  :)

There's no way to know if you've got herpes or not.  The best thing to do is
to wait 12 to 16 weeks and then schedule a blood test.

Have you been tested for herpes before?  I'm assuming not.  It is possible
that you already have it and just never show any symptoms.  It's like this
for a huge section of the population.

You also need to ask your girlfriend if she knows exactly what type of
herpes she has.  If she knows for sure that it is type 2 then your chances
of getting it orally is slim because it doesn't like the oral area.  But it
does like the genital area.  And, if she has type 1, then getting it
genitally from her is slim, but getting it orally is more common.

It can be kind of confusing at first.

The best thing to do is to not worry too much right now because there is
nothing you can do about it.

Was the red spot that you saw in the same location as the outbreak?  It's
possible that the friction caused the red mark to become visible.

Take care,
ar

Thanks ar,
I will ask what kind she has when she gets back tonight.
The red spot was on the same area of her outbreak.
I already set up a date on my cal to get blood test in 12 weeks. Do you know
if there are different type of blood work and if one is better then the
other?

Thanks again,
AR

There are a couple of different types of blood tests.  Some are better than
others.  I would start by asking my doctor which one he uses and then report
back to us.  We can tell you if it is a good one or not.

My personal favorite is the Herpes Specific Western Blot test.  But your
doctor may have never heard of it.  It is very accurate but can be a little
tricky to get. We can help you get it if you like.  You will need the
cooperation of your doctor.  I'm assuming you're in the USA, btw.  It can be
more difficult if you are in the UK or elsewhere.

You should have your test run in 16 weeks instead of twelve if you want to
be sure.

Thanks again arlyn.
I will set up test for 16 weeks and see about the specific test you
mentioned.
