Hi,

I'm kinda worried, because last night I was in bed with this girl I'm
dating. I know she's got genital herpes because she told me, but I decided
to risk it (I've been tested...don't have it yet). I didn't wear a condom,
because it takes away from the feeling. She's not on valtrex either, and
she's got hsv1 genital. Last night we had sex for about 40 min. I wiped
myself after with a wash cloth. This morning she woke up with a huge
outbreak. She said she was swollen and itching and burning down there with
at least one sore. What are my chances of getting genital herpes? (likely,
possible, unlikely, doubtful) Should I be concerned?

Thank you,
Rob

Hi Rob,

There is always a concern.  But the chances of getting type 1 from genital to
genital contact is slimmer than if it was type 2.

But if you are worried, then please remember to use a condom.  Also, any type of
"vigorous" activity in the nether regions can bring on an outbreak, so make sure
to always use lubricant.

If you are worried about contracting herpes from her then I would use a
condom and perhaps suggest that she go on suppressive therapy. Implementing
both of those will greatly reduce your chances of contracting herpes from
her. However, ultimately you have to realize that nothing is foolproof and
that you may indeed wind up with genital herpes.

Your girlfriend may have been a little irritated down there from the
friction from having sex.. Lots of friction with lots of active virus on the
surface of the skin can be a factor in you contracting herpes from her.

Any thoughts?

Angela
