Genital Warts (HPV)

Hello All,

I know this is not a genital warts NG, but since I have genital warts and
genital herpes and I am sure alot of others do as well, I thought I'd ask
here. My past experiences with genital warts is that they don't hurt, burn
or itch at all. Recently I had some smaller new ones on the genitals that
formed in a cluster much like herpes. Usually the genital warts are large,
cauliflower shaped and alone on the groin instead of a cluster of tiny ones
right on the genitals. Well anyway, maybe its my imagination, but I have
felt as if there is some burning sensations coming from the HPV, is this
common? The second question I have is are there any oral medications like
valtrex that are effective in slowing the spread if not stopping the spread
of genital warts? Can it be removed by taking oral medications instead of
using liquid nitrogen or laser?

Thanks,
Tom

This is a common symptom of genital warts.

No.

No.

You might want to try the STD message board where there will be more people
to help answer your questions.  I'm also developing a Q and A at the top of
the HPV forum.  Here's the link to the STD Message Board:

Hope this helps,

Angela :)

Thanks for the link, I'll look at it. What I would also like to know is what
are all of the symptoms associated with genital warts? The only reason I am
wondering is so I know when something that I have is being caused by my
herpes vs. my warts. I like to keep tabs on everything and monitor it.

Thanks,
Tom

Check out the HPV faq I've been working on over on the STD message board.  I
am going to be adding to that information each day a little bit at a time.

Here's something new I didn't know about a side-effect of treatment for the
warts...Lichen Sclerosis.  If I had known about this 20 years ago, I would have
opted to keep the warts.  :)

Apparently, the treatment (acid?) weakens the skin.  And then years later, that
skin may develop lichen schlerosis.  Very painful.  Very much a horrible thing.

I'm thrilled...

Oral, no. Topical yes. There is a med called imiquimod, sold under the
tradename of Aldara (if I remember correctly) that has been licensed a
few years now and is an alternative to having -160 degree objects applied
to yerself.

Okay well that's good I guess, but I think Aldara is the acid treatment that
people say is painful to use. So far I had nitrogen and laser done on me.
What about an OTC cream? Are there any that can at least stop the burning I
get?

Another question is why is it that sometimes the warts are painless and
sometimes they are very painful like herpes and burn and I even get tingling
around the whole area like the backs of the thighs etc? Or could it be that
I am having a herpes outbreak at the same time and think it is the warts
causing the burning and tingling?

I'll tell you, I'm a mess...Genital Herpes and Genital Warts...two one of a
kinds...this really sucks!

Aldara is not acidic.  It will cause an inflammatory response but this
is due to it stimulating a natural immune response.  I've been told that
it's one of the best treatments out there for genital warts (best being
'natural', though it may be slower).
Tom - 05 Jun 2005 02:51 GMT
Is it an antiviral like valtrex or zovirax or is it something else?

No, because Valtrex, Famvir and Acyclovir are oral medications used to treat
Herpes Simplex Virus.  Aldara is a type of cream that you use to put on
genital warts.

FYI ~ over on the STD Message Board in the HPV folder I have a list of all
the different types of treatments available for genital warts.  Take a look
when you get the chance... I think it will give you a better idea of what
your options are when it comes to treating the HPV that you can actually
see.

Thank you Angela, I'll look into this, but I think there is something wrong
with the password I used to sign into your message boards because it said my
password for my tomboy83@yahoo.com was invalid. I tried to fill in the info
to reset it and it didn't work. I looked at the link for Aldara, I might
consider that for my genital warts. The genital herpes has calmed down some
since this past winter. I think a good diet and vitamins will help me there.

I did a search on the message board using the e-mail address that you
supplied me with and there was no match.  You must have signed up under a
different e-mail address.  What screen name did you create on the board and
I'll see if I can figure out which e-mail address that was to so we can
refresh your memory.

I don't even remember now, I should have written it down. I will have to re
sign up. Right now my herpes is much of a problem than my hpv. I guess the
hpv started up and then herpes really got going. Another big
outbreak...again!

Me too (with the giant herpes outbreak).  Mine is having a horrible
time.  Trying to get as much sleep and be good with the diet, but this
one's a tough one.

I know what you mean. I have had the outbreak from hell. Burning, sore and
tingling like anything...

Hang in there.  I'm not sure which is worse: the constant itching on my
tailbone or the painful cracks where my thighs move.

We'll get through this one, but it's gonna be suck-tastic.
Tom - 17 Jun 2005 04:57 GMT
I have small painful bumps and then they turn into these round open circle
shaped sores that look like a puncture, when the bump disappears. Mine are
on the tip and head of the penis and also on the underside of the penis. To
make matters worse, I think the herpes seems to have spread to my anal area
and now I keep getting itching in the anus, and I never have anal sex, so I
don't understand that!

"HSV 2 usually establishes latency in the sacral ganglion, a collection
of nerves found at the lower base of the spine. HSV-2 recurring
outbreaks will generally occur in the genital region."

Source: http://herpesonline.org/hsv1vs2.html

So it's no surprise that it goes to the middle of the tailbone
(although, my primary and secondary outbreaks didn't have it there, and
I've always wondered whether I did something to auto-inoculate myself,
or if the virus just took time to get there, or, lastly, whether my
immune system has always just been weakened since getting herpes).

Tom, you have Valtrex, right?  Don't forget to take it during prodrome
(tingling phase).  I was on a trip and didn't bring my meds, so 3-4 days
later I had a full, nasty outbreak.

Again, we're here for support.  Keep the area dry--I use Johnson's baby
powder with zinc (it's called Medicated).

And, lastly, keep hope up--there are real-world clinical trials of
therapeutic vaccines and new, better creams (Cytogenix) that will help
us hopefully longer-term and with less medication than daily Valtrex.

Okay, I cannot remember what I called the password, so I'll just create a
new sign on.
Thanks,
