Hello all,
I am writing because I just contracted herpes. I guess I have what is called
HSV1. About 2 weeks ago a girl I know was giving me oral sex (I'm a guy) in
case you are wondering. I think she had a coldsore, but I didn't think
anything of it at the time. A few days later I started getting some weird
symptoms. I had some pains in my thighs and then I had this pinchy cool
tingling in the front and back and sides of the pelvic area. Then I got
really sore aching sensations in the penis that felt like I was being
squeezed or bitten over there, and finally extreme burning.
I examined the area and found out that the skin was all red and swollen.
There was a strange swelling that looked like layers of swollen skin/bumps
all around the tip of the penis head. When I urinated it felt pinchy. I
didn't really get any "blisters" instead I just had bump after bump, but
they were kind of small and hard to see. Then I examined the area and there
were all these tiny round red sores in the places where the bumps were the
day before. I went to the clinic and I was given valtrex for a week. I am
done with the valtrex, but the soreness and burning is still coming although
the bumps are less and smaller. I also get some itching here and there. I am
still getting bumps, two weeks later and sores, but the sores are tiny and
seem to heal in a couple of days or so.
The strange thing is that all of the sores are healing without scabs and I
always heard that herpes sores get scabs. Why is this? I haven't been with
anyone else in a long time and therefore this person must have given me
herpes when she was going down on me. Plus the herpes started around a week
after she had suckled me with her mouth. I feel better but even now, two
weeks later I am still getting tingling and burning coming in waves as if it
keeps starting back up again from the beginning. I heard about something
called a primary outbreak. Can this primary keep starting back up from the
beginning like this? I mean go from ache, to tingle, burn to bumps and then
back again and keep doing this? When will it end?
Thanks in advance,
Bill

Hi Bill,
Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. However, if all the doctor did was a visual
exam, you should go back and make sure you actually have herpes. They can do a
culture on a fresh sore and you'll know at that point. Make sure you tell the
doctor to have it 'typed.' They don't do that unless you ask, sometimes. If
the doctor runs the culture on a sore that has been around for more than a day
or two, you run the risk of getting a false negative as a test result.
Also, get more valtrex!!!! There's no need to suffer when there is a medication
that can help. Ask for more and don't stop taking it unless the outbreak has
been gone for...I don't know...a few days or so. I don't take the meds so I'm
not as up on med protocol...
Herpes looks different in everyone. There is no 'typical' outbreak. Some get
the classic symptoms. some get bumps that look like pimples. Some get a rash
and that's all. And some never show symptoms at all.
The primary is the worst outbreak, usually. How long will it last? That
depends on how healthy you are. Right now your immune system is working to
learn how to identify the herpes virus so it can stop it before it hits your
skin. This process can take about a year. So, other than taking the meds, make
sure you are eating right, sleeping right, getting exercise, and destressing as
much as you can. All these things help the immune system to work better.
I also have genital type 1 herpes. My first two years were pretty awful. But
now, 18 years later, I never have outbreaks. I do get neuralgia pain (nerve
pain associated with herpes), which tells me that the virus is on the move. But
I rarely have outbreaks.
Please feel free to ask more questions.

Thanks ar,
Well these sure are strange pimples, they look more like layers of raised
skin with round areas about the size of a pin head and they area ll around
the penis head. Then I looked again and the sores look like little round
areas with a red "punctured" looking center which is getting smaller and
healing. The tingling is mostly gone and the aching but I still have some
burning, also some itching near the anus. Could that be herpes there too?
She kissed me and my lips are a little burning also so I wonder if I got it
there? No cold sores on me, just burning on the lips a little.
So now what? I have herpes, should I stay with the person that gave me
herpes or dump her? I feel violated.
Thanks,
Bill

Again.. you need to have the doctor run some tests. Nobody can diagnose you
for sure over the internet.

If you don't have any fresh sores that can be cultured withint 24 to 48
hours then you need to have a type specific herpes antibody test done. It's
a herpes blood test that will tell you if you have type-1, type-2, both or
nothing at all.

Sounds to me like she's not the only person you've been in contact with over
your lifetime.. therefore you can't possible know for sure whom you
contracted the herpes from.. IF you even have herpes in the first place.

Angela

Hi Bill,
The herpes virus lives in the nerve bundle that serves the entire genital area
so it is possible that you will have outbreaks on your backside as well. But
don't worry too much about it for now - things do settle down after the first
year.
I can understand that you feel violated. But most people have no idea that oral
herpes can lead to genital herpes through oral sex. Should you stay with her?
Only if you love her. Many of us have partners who are uninfected. Right now,
just worry about yourself and learning about your virus and how to control it.
Take care,

Not all herpes outbreaks scab over.

Not necessarily.

You only get your primary outbreak once.

If your symptoms continue I would have your doc check everything out and run
some tests just to make sure there isn't something more going on in addition
to herpes. Something else to consider is daily suppressive therapy with
Valtrex if it's indeed the herpes that is causing your discomfort.

Angela :)
