Hi All,
I'm new to this newsgroup, and I missed the original post on this topic. I
was wondering if anyone could share the details of this study with me? I
saw something about "asymptomatic participants" and thought I might like to
check it out.
That said...let me introduce myself. I'm 29 and I've been HSV-2 positive
for about 3 years I think. I've never had an outbreak, and only found out I
have HSV because my yearly paps produced abnormal cells. So I've only known
since last November. I was dating someone at the time who, after getting
over the initial shock, decided he did not care. Fortunately, I never
passed anything on to him. We broke up last March for other reasons, and
I've discovered that I don't wish to have the "conversation" with a new
person. So here I am...ready to make friends, get some advice, and make
some mischief! =)

Here is the original post for you:
You or someone you know may be able to participate in a local herpes
study and receive free medication and medical care in the process.
ASHA's National Herpes Resource Center focuses on increasing
education, public awareness, and support to anyone concerned about
herpes. Reporting on and referring individuals to on-going herpes
research is an important part of these endeavors. GlaxoSmithKline is
seeking individuals to participate in a 4 to 5 month Valtrex
(valacyclovir) study. Qualified participants will receive study
related medications and study related medical care at no cost during
their participation in the study. If you are interested in
participating, please call the study site nearest you and ask about
study VLX103596.

Hi SongStar.
Welcome to the group.
I was surprised to find out that you discovered your herpes through a pap. It
has always been my understanding that a pap won't show herpes. How did your
doctor come to this conclusion? Generally, a pap will show that a woman has
HPV, which is the virus that causes genital warts (among all other warts). Did
your doctor just assume you had herpes type 2 after the pap? Or, did you have a
blood test to prove it.
Take care,
ar

Hi ar,
Thanks! Well, all my paps showed were "abnormal cells." I kept having to
go back every 3 months, and sometimes the results were fine but not
consistently enough. I was tested for HPV, since that has been associated
with this condition, but it came back negative. Finally I went to a
specialist who did a biopsy and a blood test for HSV types 1 and 2. I was
negative for type 1, and positive for type 2. And no cancer, thank God!
While I can't say I'm thrilled with the results, it's certainly better than
the alternative. I guess I'm lucky to never have had any external signs
though...just weird cells. =)

Hi Songstar,
Thank goodness it is just the type 2, then. :) And at least you are aware of
it.
Take care,
ar
