There are thousands of web sites on herpes and 99.8% of them say the
same thing, but I think they're ignorant when it comes to Type I
genital herpes.  The web sites mostly say that all herpes is "very
contagious."

Well, I have Type I genital herpes, and I want the facts from others
who have Type I genital herpes, and who don't have Type II genital
herpes.

First here is a quote from one web site that doesn't just copy from
other web sites:

"For example, most people infected with HSV-1 in the genital area have
few, if any, outbreaks after the initial episode, far fewer than is
typical with either oral HSV-1 or genital HSV-2. While experts estimate
that some 30% of genital herpes infections in the United States may be
caused by HSV-1, only 2- 5% of recurring genital outbreaks are caused
by HSV-1. Research conducted by Lawrence Corey, MD, and colleagues at
the University of Washington in Seattle shows that genital HSV-2 recurs
10 times more often than genital HSV-1.
According to a study by Wald et al. (New England Journal of Medicine,
1995), among 110 women with genital herpes, the average number of
recurrences per year for those with genital HSV-1 was zero. Other
studies have shown an average of about one outbreak per year
(Benedetti, Annals of Internal Medicine, 1994)."

I've also read in medical articles that Type I genital herpes sheds
about 3 days a year.  I saw a posting from someone with Type I genital
herpes who has had 3 outbreaks in 9 years, and who did not infect her
spouse.

My questions for people with Type I genital herpes:

1. How long has it been since you had your first outbreak?
2. How many outbreaks have you had since your first outbreak?
3. To your knowledge have you ever passed herpes on to another person
from genital contact, and do you or do you not use condoms when having
sex?

Thank you.

19 years.

>2. How many outbreaks have you had since your first outbreak?

How should I know?  That was a long time ago!!  The first two years were
horrible.  I had outbreaks every month.  It was awful.  Then they subsided.  I
didn't have any outbreaks again until I had to take three months of prednisone,
which triggered monster outbreaks that were horrible and that's where I
developed neuralgia.  I have had not had an actual outbreak in about...5 years
or more?  Can't remember.  But, I have had the neuralgia act up on about two or
three occasions which tells me that either I was going to have an outbreak or I
was shedding or something.  However, I am very healthy.  I eat a healthy diet, I
exercise, I never get colds and I haven't had the flu in 22 years.  Oh, I did
get a stomach virus about  7 years ago.  What I'm saying is that my immune
system is very strong.

No.  Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

Each person is different.  There are people with type 2 genital herpes that
never, ever have an outbreak.  They  might not even ever have a primary
outbreak.  And there are people with type 1 who suffer.  It really has to do
with your body and how it handles the virus.

3 or 4  which were nothing like my first OB - I would probably have missed
them if I hadn't known what it was)

Have pretty much held off on the genital contact - because I've dated both
non-HSV and HSV type 2 guys and want to make sure the relationship is
heading somewhere before we start to take risks.  Alas, things haven't quite
progressed as I might have hoped (nothing to do with H!)
