Annual checkup for herpes

I finally saw my annual doctor about my "herpes story". He listened and
seemed a little concerned. At first before I could finish he interrupted and
said "maybe you have a yeast infection" but then I told him the rest of the
symptoms and the fact that I also have genital HPV, and he said it sounded
like genital herpes, and he gave me some information on herpes to read. The
funny thing is once I told him I had genital HPV he seemed more convinced
that I wasn't making up the story about the herpes and that it was more than
a yeast infection. Then I asked him to prescribe something like valtrex and
he didn't want to because he said that unless I am really having a problem
with the blisters I probably don't need the valtrex. He said if I continue
to have big flare ups with alot blisters to see a skin specialist like a
dermatologist, so I guess he doesn't want to consider it his area.  I told
him that most of my pain is the aching thighs, itching skin, lower back pain
and some burning, but I didn't get that many blisters. He told me I need to
loose a few lbs and get in shape, but everything else was okay. So I think
I'm going to continue what I am doing and take lysine, vitamins and eat well
and pray that I don't anymore big outbreaks.

Find a public health clinic or go to Planned Parenthood. This messing
around with doctors who consider HSV I & II to be a mere skin problem
are not worth the money.  What else are they skimping on in your
health care concerns and needs?

Planned Parenthood is more than contraception.  It is too often the
main source of diagnosis and treatment of STD in many communities.

LK,

That's a good point about planned parenthood.  I had actually gone to 3
different types of doctors before I went to planned parenthood.  I have to
say that at least the planned parenthood examination felt a bit more
thorough, and they weren't just in a rush to get me out of there.  The
doctors I had seemed as if they didn't want to waste a minute looking at
this...I remember one just sat like 3 feet away from me for a "visual
examination" of the area and said everything was fine.

Yes well I am starting to get tired of going to doctors. I have herpes and
right now its been more calm other than some minor aching, but I'm just
going to have to take care to not have anymore big ones, if I have any
control???! I know alot of people in the medical field like to pass it off
as no big deal, but when I was really suffering I didn't know what else to
do. I felt helpless, and kind of alone because alot of people treat it like
you have the plague or something.

My friends and family now know I have this and are very supportive of me. I
also am grateful I was able to talk to everyone here and come to a better
understanding of herpes, which has also helped me alot. I did alot of
reading on the subject and even bought a book on managing herpes-a chronic
std. I feel alot better equipped now, and its not as scary although I am
still a little mad about it and sometimes in more pain than other times. I
am sure it will become an extension of me and I won't notice it that much in
time. Having herpes is just another part of who I am as a person, but its
not something that I should have to feel ashamed about.

Wise words, Tom.

You're in the U.S.A., right?  I can't believe you have a doctor here
who doesn't want to prescribe something, unless he's working for a
very strict HMO.  Valtrex isn't just for the blisters, but for the
general HSV viral activity, and so should help with your HSV-related
aches and pains, too.

The recommendation to go to Planned Parenthood is a good one, as
they are quite familiar with sexual issues, including HSV and HIV,
and they are discreet and affordable.  They don't care if you're
male or female, either.  Of course, any other clinic should be able
to give you further tests if you wish, and/or provide you with a
prescription.

As bad as you've had it, you ought to at least consider finding a
more sympathetic doctor.

Take care,

Mike

Hello Mike,

Well my huge outbreak has ended and 2 weeks later I started a new but much
smaller one. Compared to the first one this is nothing but a little
bothersome. I started out feeling tired and then achy in the pelvic area and
now the genital area and anus is burning but its not that bad right now. I
am sure it will run the same course as the first one, but I think I can
manage without meds. If I have a huge or bigger problem later on, I'll seek
another doctor. I think my doctor is just very conservative in terms of
medicines. I'm back taking the lysine having gone off it a week or so.

I am starting to get back into the swing of things and actually am going to
be dating again. This time I met a woman who also has genital herpes and
that's something that will prevent the long and embarrassing talk. I really
wish I didn't have herpes though because it is so aggravating sometimes.

I ended up being "bad" and had some chocolate a few times over the course of
3 days and I hope that's not what brought out the second outbreak.
