I hope I don't get flamed for this, but since I have been having a larger
than usual outbreak, I have had exceptionally dry skin on my hands, and
shins. Does anyone else have this happen? I don't take any meds, but I use:
A multi vitamin, E 400, C 500, Zinc 50, B6 50, B complex 50, and Lysine 500.
Any clues or is this just the winter and cold weather causing the dry skin?

No one is going to flame you for this.  :)

I don't know about the dry skin correlation.  However, just having dry skin
could bring on an outbreak.

Your lysine dose is very small, by the way.  It should be around 1500, if I
remember correctly.

Also, try some flax seed oil or other type of oil to help with the dry skin.
You should take it internally.  Fish oil seems to help some but I'm a vegetarian
so I won't actually promote that.  :)  I used coconut oil on my skin when I was
in Vermont.  It seemed to work well.

Thanks AR...

Well I live in Rhode Island, and we get very intense winters and alot of
snow. I bought some Curel Extra Strength skin cream last night and it has
been helping. I didn't want to take too my Lysine, because one time when I
had taken 2 doses in a day (1000mg) I ended up with heartburn! When you say
Fish oil you mean Vitamin A or just fish oil? I used to take A 10,000, but
stopped because I heard it depletes calcium levels in the bones. I could
look into Flaxseed or Fish oil I suppose.

Thanks,

Well, actually, eating too much meat will also deplete the calcium in your
bones.  Make sure you exercise and get plenty of dietary calcium.  :)

I really don't know much about fish oil but that others have said it helps them.
But there are other oils that you can take in capsule form that will help with
dry skin.

I think I used Evening Primose Oil for a bit...

Take care,

I just had my first outbreak, and I had very dry skin on my hands and
arms along with it.  The backs of my hands actually cracked and bled,
which has never happened before.  However I attributed it to a lot of
hand washing,, which I also had been doing.

I was also taking Valtrex.  Maybe that dries up the skin as well as the
sores.

Have you been using moisturizer?

I used moisturizer for a few days to treat the dry skin.
Grant - 12 Mar 2005 17:46 GMT
Did that take care of it?  You might want to moisturize every day.

The cracked dry skin on the back of my hands healed up when the herpes
sores healed and the Valtrex ended.  So the dry skin was definitely
related to the herpes or the Valtrex.  I only needed the moisturizer
for a few days.

I actually had the same kind of dry skin on the backs of my hands also, and
I don't use Valtrex (yet). I did use some moisturizer for a couple of days
but stopped and the dry skin returned a little, but I did notice that the
dryest part was in the midst of the blisters I was getting, so maybe there
is a relation, anything is possible.

That's a great question.

In my view, it can be a direct relationship between the dryeness of
the skin and the activity of the herpes virus.
What was in first the chicken or the egg?
Skin's dryeness causing the herpes activity or vice-versa?

I don't have the answers yet.

Yes I am not sure either, but I never got dry skin on the backs of my hands
before this big OB started. Maybe it is the herpes? When I had my previous
recurring OB's they were mild compared to what I just went through so I
never noticed that before, but I don't know...

It's an issue as tough as the head-ache or migraine issue.
What caused it, what healed it, can have so many variables.
My guess would be to look at our own body to identify signs
that seem to relate to the dryness of skin and all that.
