any success stories?

Hi, I am a longtime lurker, but I've got a question that I would love to
get some feedback on.

Some background:   I've had HSV2 for about 10 years.  I take Acyclovir
daily as a suppressive therapy, which does a pretty good job of keeping
OB's away. I average maybe 2 a year.

My concern:  I am currently single, and cannot accept that I will "most
likely" give HSV2 to a future girlfriend/wife... which is what I read
fairly often in this newsgroup.

My question:   Are there any success stories out there where one partner
has HSV2 but never "gives" it to the other partner?  My thought is that
if I keep taking Acyclovir for eternity,  and if I am as self-aware as
possible looking for prodrome symptoms, etc..., and abstain from sex
whenever in doubt, shouldn't I have a pretty good chance of not passing
this damned virus to a partner?

I truly hope that there are some success stories out there.  I can't
imagine adding to the already unpleasant task of telling a potential
relationship partner that in addition to me being HSV2 positive, "oh by
the way, you will most likely end up with it too"...

I currently take 400MG of Acyclovir 2x a day...is there a possible
benefit in upping that to some stronger dose to maybe help my chances of
not-spreading the virus?

I am currently friends with a truly awesome woman who is nice, funny,
gorgeous, and a seemingly perfect soulmate for me as well... but the
thought of passing on the herp to her kills me inside.

Thank you in advance for listening.  I hope some of you will have "good
news" for me :)

Regards,
D

Hi D,

Just don't assume that this awesome girl doesn't already have herpes.  :)  You
never know...

I have type 1 but my ex never showed signs of having contracted it after 17
years together.  No meds, either.

D,
Ar mentioned the exact thing that popped into my mind when I read your
post. Don't ever assume someone else doesn't have herpes just because
the tell you they don't.  Up to 90% of infections go unnoticed and
unknown by the infected. If she has ever been sexually active, she
should have her herpes status checked along with other stds. As a long
time lurker, you probably know that herpes is not usually included in
a typical std panel. You have to ask for it specifically. And
sometimes you have to lead a doc by the hand to show him how/where to
order a test. Or, she can handle it online if she likes:
http://www.healthcheckusa.com/
Tell her to order the HerpeSelect Herpes Simplex Virus 1&2 IgG.
Not the IgM.

Secondly, yes I know several long time discordant couples. You can
never eliminate the risk totally but transfer is definitely not
inevitable. Faithful use of suppression plus condoms is a proven way
of reducing risk quite a bit. I doubt upping your dosage will help
much. They've run tests on this stuff to see which dosage is the most
effective.

Cool.  Thanks for the feedback.  The woman who is the target of my
affections has been married for quite some time (over 15), in what had been
a happy monogamous relationship, (and was married quite young), so I
believe the chances of her not-having HSVx is pretty high. Still, I agree
with you that we should both have all the tests run before we become more
serious (or at some pertinent time thereof) to know with authority our
"history".

I still hope to hear more "success stories" to boost my morale... :)

Regards,
D

D,

I got my herpes from my first partner.  I was married rather young and for a
long time.  Your logic is flawed.  :)

I've been on the dating scene now for two years.  I've gotten close enough to
three men to tell them about my herpes.  One of the three had type 2 already and
the others had type 1 already.  I think the odds are that your lady might
already have  had a cold sore at sometime in her life.

AR, thanks for your perspective.  You make good points...

I appreciate the feedback.

This is really long and likely off topic here and there (its LATE) but read
it anyways :)   I have had HSV2 since I was 15! I am 26 now, and have had
the same partner 7 yrs, and he has never had even a single hint of an
outbreak. I have never used any kind of suppressive therapy or even
abstained from sex because  I only just now found out for sure I had it - I
had an outbreak during pregnancy, and now remember EXACTLY who and when I
got it.. he was a kid and said it was a rash from soap and whacking off..
f'n liar!...GRR.. Anyways I asked to be checked and even though the doc said
it didnt look like it (simply welts on my butt cheek, only twice on my
genitals) he would, and it was! I had been misdiagnosed, told it was the way
my body dealt with stress (because when I cried hard, or lacked sleep, i
would have them the very next day) I got the fever and pain so bad on the
inner thigh/around the back of my leg where by leg stops and butt starts
that I DREADED using the restroom because the cold of the toilet seat on the
fevered skin hurt SO BAD. I have even had it diagnosed (when I was 20) as a
furuncle - messed up hair folicles/boil.
ANYWAYS  - the doc said that my b/f may never get an outbreak but after 7
yrs more than likely carries the virus ( he for sure has hsv1 because he had
horrible cold sores as a kid).. most people actually have the virus, yet
only have one initial outbreak, their body builds up an immunity or
something.. .. speaking of which - I cannot remember the "primary
outbreak"... since I have still only got these welt like outbreaks... so not
even everyone has those!

Kim,

Do you have genital type 2 or type 1?  I'm a bit confused by your posts.

There is still viral some shedding going on, even when you are on
Acyclovir, and even when you have no sores.  This is why I tell every
sex partner I am with all the information that I know, then they can
make the decision on how to deal with the situation.  Only one of them
wanted to use a condom - the rest either had HSV themselves, or decided
that sex with me was worth the risks.
