outbreaks...again!

I just finished what was probably the primary outbreak, because I think I
was infected in early November 2004, and strangely I had my first outbreak
around 2/1/2005. The outbreak lasted almost 5 weeks, then started to get
better and I was almost better. Yesterday I had a large coffee in the
morning and I don't know if this is possible, but I think it triggered
something. I got this tingling/aching in the tailbone of the lower back and
then my whole lower back and butt and hips and thighs became very achy. In
an hour I had a head ache and felt tired and later I had some itching going
on. Now today I feel alot better, just a little tired and have a slight
headache, but nothing major.

1. Was yesterdays episode a smaller recurring outbreak or the same one that
got re-triggered?
2. Does anyone know what the norm is for frequencies after a primary OB?
3. Why did the primary take 3 months to start, when they are supposed to
start in a couple of weeks from infection?
4. I really don't want to have to rely on Valtrex, but I am thinking of
asking my doctor for some to keep on hand when I see him soon. I'm going to
inform him of all the tests I had and the outcome, but I really just want to
change my diet and take vitamins, but am I being realistic? I just feel like
I am really suffering right now.

I think my condition is HSV1, genital and with a borderline IgG. I don't get
coldsores even though I have HSV1, but sometimes I get sore pimple like
things near the lips that feel a little achy, and ooze, but they aren't as
big and noticeable like coldsores.

Thanks for your help,

Tom

Tom,

the thing to remember is that there is no "normal" for herpes.  Ignore what the
literature and doctors say.

Caffeine is a huge herpes trigger for many people.  Yes, it is possible that by
drinking the coffee you started another outbreak.  But the body is so revved up
fighting the one you are recovering from that it just didn't manifest fully.

>2. Does anyone know what the norm is for frequencies after a primary OB?

There is no "normal."  We are all different.  some people never have another
outbreak.  Others have them monthly.

There is no "supposed to start."  Some people don't have their primary until
YEARS after infection.  In my case, I had small outbreaks once or twice but
then, I had the mother of outbreaks.  That huge, awful, outbreak was my
"primary."  These are just words.  Don't worry about them too much.

Yes, you are being realistic.  Use the Valtrex for now because you are having
such a difficult time of it.  Changing your diet can take awhile.  Your main
goal is to be healthy.  Plan for the long term.  You can stop taking the Valtrex
whenever you want.

Take care,

Thanks ar,

I am starting to understand that there is no norm for herpes now. Its funny
how doctors seem to make it seem that its one way or no way, but that's not
the case. I think I did have some smaller outbreaks previous to this one,
now that I think of it, but this one was the worst!

Its funny though that I got these blisters all of a sudden and most were
kind of like blister/pimples that just came to a head and then dried up,
except one that burst and got painful and now there is a scab on it. I
didn't have that maybe, just a few small ones and 1 big one, so I wasn't
sure what to think.

I changed my diet. I no longer eat chocolate, coffee, nuts and raisins, at
least very rarely if at all. I have been eating much better and taking alot
of vitamins and Lysine (1000mg now). I don't drink hardly at all and don't
smoke. I also bought a book called "Managing a Chronic STD: Herpes, and
living with it". I bought it on Amazon so I should get it by Friday. I'm
going to talk to my doctor about the possibility of valtrex and maybe a
cream for the sores.

Well thanks again,

I am sure I will have more questions at some point.

Tom
