I was told to take 200 mg twice a day because the body breaks it down
quicker than the name brands like Zovirax....
I hope this helps... it's the standard dose and the one I am on right now.

Bon jour, André.  I no speak Frönch.

You can take acyclovir UP TO the dose your doctor prescribed, or any
amount lesser as long as you are comfortable.  If you follow your
doctor's instructions you can take it as long as you like.  There do
not seem to be any effects from long term usage at moderate levels,
though, of course, there are always more studies being done on such
things.  Nothing is for certain, but it seems that acyclovir is
fairly safe over the long term.

However, there is no need to take it if you don't want to.  For
instance, if you are not having outbreaks, and are not trying to
protect your partner, you may not need or want to spend the money
(or otherwise use the resources) on the stuff.

For many people, it is sufficient to take it when they feel an
outbreak coming on.  Often there is a tingling, or itching at the
site of the outbreak that gives a warning of an approaching
outbreak, and if you can begin taking the acyclovir then, you may
stop or inhibit the outbreak.

Hope that helps.

Mike
