Hello,

I got the results and its negative for both, but I still have the symptoms,
so I am going to talk to the urologist on Tuesday and find out what he
thinks. A family member of mine thinks that the doctor ordered the wrong
tests or made a mistake because she is convinced it is herpes. Actually I
don't know what to believe because I have all the symptoms. The doctor
suggested that its a yeast infection, but I know that they don't turn into
open sores and reoccur with the same pattern. I have all the symptoms of
herpes 2. I have been having these same symptoms for about 5 years and
finally decided to check on it. I have almost all the symptoms. I cannot
believe that a yeast infection would be going on for 5 years with 5-6
outbreaks a year with hives turning into sores and itching and tingling and
burning, plus the other things like burning in the urine and aches and
slight temp and headache etc. I had some urine tests to make sure it wasn't
another STD. Is it possible that the tests could be wrong or something
wasn't done right?

Thanks,

Tom

Yes, it's possible the test is wrong, though not very likely.
Modern tests are all in the 98% or better range for reliability.

Did you find out what kind of test it was?

The most reliable way to test is to wait until you have fresh sores,
and have those *cultured*.   Ask your doctor about that.

Take care,

Mike

Hello,

According to the clinic I had IGG for HSV 1 and 2 and IGM(?) for HSV 1 and 2
and there was no decimal reading according to the clinic only a neg or pos
and it came back negative. The tests took 5 days. They said they don't use
western blot. I don't have the sores now, everything already healed. What
should I do? Should I wait until I get another outbreak and then rush to the
clinic to test the sores? I want to talk to my urologist for the heck of it.
How reliable is IGG and IGM?

Thanks,
Tom

Almost all the blood tests are IgG or IgM, so that doesn't tell you
much.  You should find out if it was a Herpes Select  or some kind
of ELISA or perhaps something else.

Yes, you should still talk to your urologist, and any other doctors
you can afford or have the time for.  It seems unusual for some of
your symptoms like painful urination to have persisted for so long.

And yes, you should find out how much notice you need to give to
rush in for a swab for a culture the next time those sores appear.
Some clinics you can walk in just about anytime and they can do it.
Best to check ahead of time, though.

Best luck to you.

Hi Tom,

Have the doctor/lab send you a copy of your test results.  Let us know what it
says.

Okay, I guess I can ask them. I don't want to bother them again. I already
called there 2 times today. I'm seeing the urologist this coming Tuesday. I
know I have HPV Genital, so I am wondering if that can cause lesions and
itching and burning and painful urination even in the areas that there are
no warts?

The urologist is going to check me for the burning urination problems, which
have been a problem for a couple of weeks. The outbreak that I got lasted
about 2 weeks and usually is gone in 1 week to 10 days. I told the doctor
all of the information on the symptoms and they passed it off as if it is
just a yeast infection, pimples and urine infection. Maybe so, but I find it
unlikely that this reoccurs every 2 months or so, and goes through the same
phases and duration almost everytime...and in the same area of the body!

Thanks,
Tom

I know the answer, but I gotta ask: Were you tested for such things
as gonnorhea and chlamydia?  They are very common, and share a
number of symptoms, or can be almost symptomless.  At this point I'd
want to be checking everything.

Maybe it's just yeast or a UTI, but better to get it all looked at.

Take care,

Mike

I know they did urinalysis's for something like that, but that wasn't the
problem that I seem to have. I had yeast infections and I think I had
something like Clamydia once, but this is different.

I was talking to an ex girlfriend on the phone tonight. It turns out that
she has also been getting these symptoms with itching and burning and sores
for years also. She was also telling me that her ex-boyfriend that she dated
prior to being with me was diagnosed with genital herpes during the time she
was seeing him. Shortly after the diagnosis, she had a severe "rash" from
him. She told me that the severe rash went away and never really came back,
but she ended up with the sores between the buttocks, which I also get. So
since her ex boyfriend had genital herpes, and then she got a rash from him,
and now both of us have the same rashes that happen for the same length of
time and do the same thing, I think we can conclude that me and her both
could have genital herpes...I have the feeling that the clinic is trying to
brush me off according to a friend of mine also.

There's no harm in getting second or third opinions.  Or raising
hell if you're on some plan where they discourage you from changing
doctors.

Hi Tom,

I'm just really concerned that the blood test showed you were negative.  You
really need to get a copy of that blood test...

Hello,

Well I will call the lab and ask for the report to be sent to my house then.
I'll keep you posted on that.

I am going to talk to a urologist this coming Tuesday because of the burning
sensation that I had during the outbreak which is better now, but I want to
check anyway. I'll talk to him at the time and find out his opinion. My
family member that advised me is pretty knowledgeable and worked in a
hospital and for a doctors office. I heard that some tests can be as
inaccurate as 30%, although this is not that common. Now knowing that my ex
girls prior boyfriend had herpes and gave her a rash which she described
like herpes and now we both are sharing the same symptoms is making me
worried. I don't know what to think.

Thanks,

Tom

Probably the best way to find out what is causing those sores is to have one
cultured.  Talk to the clinic and let them know what you plan on doing.

Did they run a culture on your urine to determine if you might have a UTI?  I've
lost track of the tests you've had, sorry.

HOpefully you'll get to the bottom of this soon.

Hello Grant,

I don't know if they tested for a UTI, but its possible. If not the
urologist will I am sure. I also think I remember other urine burning
conditions during previous outbreaks. Then I will tell him the story about
the girl I dated and also the fact that I already have HPV. I did however
notice that while taking higher doses of vitamins the outbreaks were
lessened and less frequent. I used to take C 1000, E 400, A 10,000, multi
vitamin and Zinc 60. I was also advised that Lysine can help viral problems.

Thanks,

Tom

Hi Grant,

Why is there a concern for the Negative results? Is it because there could
have been a mistake or something else?

Thanks,
Tom

They typically have a fail rate of less than 1% for generating false
negatives if I remember correctly.

How well educated on herpes is the family member...I ask simply because
there are enough ill informed doctors around, and if I had a pound for
every person I have met/shared a house with/been friends with who has told
me stuff that 'everybody knows' about herpes and happened to be wrong Id
be a rich man.....its difficult enough to diagnose in many cases if you
are an expert.

Your body could be being weird and its a recurrent varicella zoster virus
infection, very rare that it should happen at all, let alone looking
precisely like HSV but that would produce the right lesions, would respond
to the same meds potentially but doesn't crossreact on the tests. The
classic areas for shingles like that are the waist and face and recurrent
disease (well multiple recurrences to be precise) are pretty damn rare in
the first place.

If it was that it would be really really really weird though.

I think there are some bacterial infections like this in the
staphylococcus set kinda like weird impetigo but Id have to ask because
again its not an area I know about to the required level.

Other mildly wild guesses would be some kind of exanthema thats ulcerating
or allergies...but I can;t go more specific than that - its all down to
exactly what that lesions is doing.

You might try a dermatologist as the place for 'what else could it be'
rather than a urologist, you know...

> finally decided to check on it. I have almost all the symptoms. I cannot

I don;t know enough about yeast to say with any certainty but if a yeast
specialist said such infections could inflame and ulcerate in a similar
fashion it wouldnt surprise me.

> another STD. Is it possible that the tests could be wrong or something
> wasn't done right?

Possible but very rare. Clinical science of that sort of test is soooo
based on absolute reproducibility and double checking and repetitive
activity with bookkeeping its quite hard to destable the circuit....or
should be.
