This is a test due to undue computer viral attacks.  :)

Well, it worked.  Unfortunately, due to the attacks I was getting (up to 200
+ so far this weekend), I've had to change my email and can no longer post
with my real email address.  :(

But it's still me.

I can always be reached at arlynsg@yahoo.com

I do wonder if by some vicious irony a mahine a spammer uses to send stuff
out has been hit by a virus. The thing has obviously been hoovering emails
that are in clear, mainly from Usenet and also some webpages. Im getting
100-200 a day at the moment...

Have you had no success with filtering the emails?

> I can always be reached at arlynsg@yahoo.com

If the address you put here is clearer than it is in the headers of you
normal posts you might want to consider cancelling and slightly tweaking
the address.

Thanks, Tim.

The filters weren't working because I received no repeats.  Because I never
give out my adelphia address it was just as easy to cancel it and get a new
email address.

Take care,

Tim & Ar,
Are y'all still getting them?
I'm not getting viruses, just bulk email. And not more in number, but
just larger. Each one MUCH larger than usual. Started up a few days
ago. So 20 or 30 spam messages puts me over my storage limit and shuts
down my account. I'm having to go in and empty my "bulk mail storage"
every few hours now. Before, I could get by with emptying it every 2-3
weeks. And like you Ar, I'm not getting many repeat senders that I can
filter. I thought it would let up by now but it's still pouring in.
I would prefer to talk with y'all by email about this off topic stuff
but my email is a little iffy while this is going on. And since Ar
brought up the idea of viruses in this thread, I figure what the hey!
Close enough! LoL!

We're all about viruses here!  :)

I changed my email address so I no longer get them.

Sorry that you're having so much trouble.  :(

Somehow I've gotten by these years without munging my addy but I might
have to if this keeps up. We'll see. I've added more filters but at
some point filters start eliminating legitimate mail. Think I'll just
sit tight a few more days and try to weather the storm.
Thanks for the come back ;-)

Try this string, M2:

AJBAPACQQDkAkEA3AJBANACQQDEAkEAvAJBALACQQ

You'll need to search the body of the emails, but that string appears
near the top of every Swen virus attachment, and isn't likely to
appear in anything else.

Yeah, I know, where was I last week with this great information.  If
anyone knows, tell me, because I haven't a clue.  ;-)

Take care and sure hope this is one virus that gets cured.

Thanks Mike
I don't think Swen is my current problem but I added the filter for it
anyway. I'd rather it not BECOME my current problem  ;-)

Thanks,

Hi All,
I keep getting these nasty bulk emails too. My antiviral program keeps
having to remove: "Worm.Automat.AHBvirus" that come with about one third of
them.
Pardon my ignorance Mike, but this "string" you mention. What are us
technically challenged people supposed to do with it?
Yours in good faith,
Maree

In the various mail programs that exist you can filter stuff out with
various blocks etc (in Outlook its using message rules). You would tell it
to find that string of letters in the main body of the mail, and then
either not download the mail or send it to the delete file or etter yet
delete it from the servr without downloading it.

That way you'll hopefully find a bunch of them before they come near your
machine

Thanks for the info Tim, but my version of Outlook Express will only block
out a domain, i.e., emails that have an address, eg: jbloggs@woof.com. So I
guess I can't use the "string".

Er yes it will - you are using OE 5.5 which is the same version I had
until 2 months ago, that could use message rules to find
a string of characters and delete it....you are looking at the block
sender option from the open mail which is more limited.

In one of the drop down menus at the top (dont have OE here so Ill have to
get home to check which one on my OE) there is a message rules option (use
the help file to find it if you want)

Then you set up a rule that searches for the string in the main body of
the message, and then ditch it. Ill post the precise actions when I get a
chance from my home machine.

Yeah around 2-4 an hour as a minimum

> I'm not getting viruses, just bulk email. And not more in number, but

As well as virus sending the virus originally would have launched with
listed IDs as the sender - to produce even more grief - a lot of these may
be genuine alert messages coming back or genuine bounce messages from
receivers of the mail where your address was the listed from address.

If its over 100K its likely toting a payload. If not it coud be a bounce
or a filtered mail. A number have the virus buried in a lot of
interminable HTML crap so you dont notice the payload.

I added that string that Mike suggested to my body filters (at yahoo),
plus "Microsoft" or "MS" or "Internet" or "Security"or "Network" to my
"From:" header filter and haven't had a problem since (but it's been
only 8 hours). I don't know which is working, my From: filters or
Mike's string, but so far so good.

Note: (to anybody emailing me) Don't use one of those keywords up
there in your From: header or my filters will trash it!   LoL!

Btw, I don't use OE or it's address book. And my email client (Agent)
can't process or launch html on its own, it can only read text. So I
normally don't have virus probs. Spam is another matter ;-)

Thanks for the info.

It's been about 24 hours and my filters are still kickin' butt!
Tim, if you haven't tried it already, plug that string that Mike
posted into a filter. I've already posted the keywords that I'm also
using, and I don't know for sure which is doing the job but I think it
may be the string. Tomorrow I may delete a few of my keyword filters,
just to see what happens.

Mine is a bit of an odd setup. I'm using yahoo webmail but downloading
it with a client (Agent) like pop mail. So I'm using the filters at
yahoo (not my clients filters) and they leave a lot to be desired.
But ... they're working, sending the large problem spam mails directly
into the trash where I can see them if I wish but they don't count
against my storage quota.

Bad news  :-(
I just found out that messages in a trash folder at yahoo DO count
against the storage quota. In other words, I've still got to sign on
to the website regularly and manually delete the trash folder to keep
my account from being shut down (Aaarrgghhh!).
Sooo ... back to square one.   :-(
